Steve Munro does what neither the TTC nor influencers seem to be doing: examining streetcar lines by segment to find slowdowns to focus on, down to individual bad intersections (looking at you, King & Cherry).

Well, that was about precisely as disappointing as I expected.
Short version: “🤡🤡🤡” — @Pkbwood@mastodon.online
Brad Bradford practiced his sound bites so very hard. He interrupted, he vibrated with his anger.
Chris Alexander was very odd. Still no idea what he’s up to. His numbers will probably go up a bit.
Olivia Chow was energetic but rough in her communication of her legit accomplishments. She made some decent hits on Bradford.
They all dodged most questions in favour of planned mini-monologues. I hate that so much.
Best question of the night, with best answers: what’s the best tree for Toronto? Worth watching the clip.

What’s the word for how everything is fractally bad now, whether you zoom out to geosynchronous orbit, or zoom in to a single ward in a city, or zoom in to [redacted] which honestly has been killing me lately, or even zoom in to the PC frozen shepherd’s pie I had?

@hamishb@mstdn.ca We both know that even the popular transportation projects in Toronto take a decade-plus to get to a yes vote, and then another decade to get to serious construction. They’ve got lots of time to keep trying.

A family friend has had to leave her apartment after two weeks without hot water and refusal to fix, and refusal to return deposit, plus racist responses to her concerns. She also said the landlady has more tenants in bad conditions in basement apartment too. Yikes.

There’s a point in this performance which 100% of the time lead me to tear up. Just thinking about them can make me shiver.

“Turns out all the institutions we built to prevent human beings from collapsing into the epistemological method of “it’s true because I believe it and my friends all say I’m right” were REALLY important. We discovered this by building a much bigger machine that functions on the second principle.”

If you use AI tools, an important piece of advice I would give you is to not make it a vital link in any process chains, because *the tool you use is going to disappear due to cost*. Plan for after the crash, not just the top of this (ridiculous) wave.
If you don’t use AI tools, you’re probably not in need of my advice; carry on.

“Learning What Substance Is Suspected of Causing Alzheimer’s May Throw You Into an Existential Crisis” [if you like vehicles with rubber tires]
“New research by a team in China discovered an alarming link between a chemical commonly found in tires and the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. The chemical, called 6PPD-Q, is formed when fine tire particles meet ozone. That happens anytime new chunks of tire are exposed to the air, meaning the particle may be nearly ubiquitous in car-heavy environments.”

Flying in hot weather in Chicago, you hear unusual things.
Pilot just announced “in order to accommodate everybody today we’re just going to burn off a little extra fuel, so you’re going to hear the engines spool up, it’ll be about five minutes.”

The move [cancelling island airport expansion] blindsided Queen's Park. Ford and Carney, who have enjoyed warm relations since the prime minister succeeded Justin Trudeau in March 2025, had even shaken hands to informally seal the deal at the premier's Etobicoke home.”
"It's Billy Bishop for Alto, that was always the understanding," said one insider, referring to the federal government's proposed high-speed rail line linking Toronto to Quebec City.

When I was a little kid, I feel like I understood all the construction equipment. Now I feel like I don’t understand any of the construction equipment, and this is for building a subway, so I feel like I should understand what I’m looking at.

I haven’t taken the TTC 900 to the airport in a decade. First time trying it has been a circus of randomized schedule, arrival, digital display, plus the entirely different sadness of a street-involved man riding the bus eating an entire roast chicken with his hands. Makes me so sad as someone who wants to promote transit.

@hamishb@mstdn.ca @LALegault@newsie.social Given his inability to describe the bridge capitulation accurately, I’d say (Occam’s Razor) it’s not planned; just a wealthy elite who flies from island a lot knows expansion popular amongst his friends & colleagues, but forgets the little people.

My favourite thing is when transit advocates forget they’re on the same team and attack each other, and the right wing politicians continue blocking better transit the entire time. It’s totally working guys.
