Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back to a stable life. Does replacing parking with bike-lanes hurt restaurant business? Of course not, as this new peer-reviewed STUDY of 15 years of Montreal data showed. ACTUALLY, downtown experienced significant restaurant growth after bike lanes were installed. @momentummag.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy momentummag.com/do-bike-lane...

Look, even though I like Bluesky a lot, there are a fair number of bad faith, negative, and sketchy accounts here too. But if you’re interested in inspiring posts about cities and how they can be better, there are a lot of great accounts here. My first starter pack has a lot of them. Check it out. Moscow has long tried to meddle in foreign elections. What's newer is Canada's neighbour overtly trying to influence and fan flames of referendum bid, warns a new report on foreign interference.

Calling protected bike-lanes “vanity projects” should be automatic evidence that a political candidate has no idea what they’re talking about when it comes to public safety, urban mobility and congestion, geometry and urban space, fiscal responsibility, or the successful positioning of cities.

Remember this picture, & others like it, every time you hear someone in your city say "we're not Amsterdam." This was #Amsterdam in the 1970s. Many of the cities we admire made tough choices regarding cars in the past, and are still making better choices today. Better choices instead of excuses.

When urbanists take pictures of a Paris street (like Rue de Rivoli) showing all the people on bikes now taking advantage of protected infrastructure, it’s not just because we “like bikes.” It’s because we’re picturing the gridlock if they were driving cars. And the public cost, pollution, noise…

Pedestrianizing a main street spine in central Reykjavík was controversial with businesses when it was first done, so they made it a summer pilot. They kept it that way, a pilot, for over a decade, and then went ahead and made it year-round and permanent. No big deal. No controversy. People like it.

All these are true:

  1. FIFA is awful and corrupt.

  2. The #WorldCup is a fantastic event despite #FIFA.

  3. Co-hosting in Canada isn’t worth the outrageous costs/conditions FIFA demands, especially with few physical legacies.

  4. Vancouver has done a fantastic job leveraging outcomes for the city.

This iconic Fabian Todorovic cartoon is still one of the best I’ve seen at illustrating the remarkable amount of space we surrender to cars, leaving little space left for everyone and everything else. The text added later makes the bonus point that many drivers still manage to complain about it.

This is really important. The REAL story isn’t that some people in Alberta want the Province to separate from Canada. The REAL story are the awful, evil powers that badly want people in Alberta to want to separate from Canada, and the shameless opportunists and useful idiots that are helping them.

To carry 50,000 people per hour in each direction, a city needs a 175m wide road for cars. Even if those cars are electric. And then there’s all the parking. OR a city can move A LOT MORE people in a lot less space, with A LOT LESS public money, emissions, pollution, noise etc. Choices. Simple.

The weather may be a bit chilly and gloomy in Vancouver today after a pretty hot week, but the mood on the Granville Street Pedestrian Zone is anything but! Lots of people out enjoying the soccer tournament, the line dancing (it’s National Day of the Cowboy!), and the generally happy street vibe. Brent Toderian (@brenttoderian.bsky.social)

So was WEEK 1 of Vancouver’s Pedestrian Zone post-World Cup extension a SUCCESS? Absolutely! It was a week of transition/turn-over, setting realistic expectations for a sustainable people-street, and rolling out new ideas. And people came, especially kids! A strong start to build on, & more coming! [contains quote post or other embedded content]
