"Seven different projects, by seven different teams, arrived independently at the same conclusion: PHP needs generics."

Good news and bad news.

Good: PHPverse is coming back 🥳

Bad: by mistake, we sent out the 2025-edition newsletter instead of the 2026-edition🫣

We'll send a followup mail to fix it, but here's already the correct link with all info: https://lp.jetbrains.com/phpverse-2026/

JetBrains PHPverse 2026 – Bringing the PHP Community Together
JetBrains: Developer Tools for Professionals and Teams

JetBrains PHPverse 2026 – Bringing the PHP Community Together

Join us for a free virtual event bringing together developers, ideas, and energy from across the ecosystem. Enjoy insightful talks, exciting announcements, and a look at the future of PHP development.

I was reading this blog post about how package managers are evil. I don't really agree on the "evil" part because package managers do solve a problem that would be very hard to deal with manually. That being said, I was curious enough to do a little experiment.

@afilina I genuinely have no idea. If I had removed it, it would still be in that screenshotted list, I believe. I get how frustrating that can be, especially if you spent effort on writing it. I'm kind of sad you assumed I censored it without checking, especially after the nice conversation with had IRL at Symfonycon. Anyway :)

More than 100 participants; two prize pools for multi- and single threaded solutions; performance already pushed to sub-3 seconds. The 100M-row challenge is doing great!

FYI: if you're with a company that wants to pitch in to biggen the prize pool, feel free to let me know :)

It's a very sad day for me today, as my IKEA Slabang clock died after almost 20 years. It was such a simple yet robust thing that just solved the problem it needed to solve, and kept doing its work for two decades.

I once wrote a blogpost about it: https://stitcher.io/blog/my-ikea-clock

@edorian How we approach that is by adding these extensions or packages as suggests, but not as a hard requirement. I think opt-in is better than opt-out (which most people forget about)

@ausi Yes, I added that to the blog post :) It's still a very crude solution to a deeper problem though, since this needs to happen on the project level, and the developer needs to actually think about it. Nevertheless, very good to mention

Replying to
@edorian True, this is what Laravel for example does with "opt-in" driver dependencies. Indeed it requires you to read the installation guide for specific components, but it's better than pushing unnecessary dependencies to all your users.
