BotKit security updates: 0.3.4 and 0.4.3 If you use BotKit, update to a patched release now. CVE-2026-50131 affects Fedify's SSRF protection for remote document and media loading, and BotKit inherits the exposure through its dependency on Fedify. Fedify validates remote ActivityPub document and media URLs before fetching them, including direct IP literals and hostnames resolved through DNS, to protect against Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF). The vulnerable path is validatePublicUrl(): affected versions rejected common private and local addresses, but still treated several special-use IPv4 ranges—including carrier-grade NAT, benchmarking, multicast, reserved, and documentation networks—as public internet destinations. An attacker could use these special-use IP address ranges to bypass Fedify's SSRF protections and cause a BotKit server to initiate requests to non-public or special-use network destinations, depending on the deployment environment and network routing. The fix makes Fedify validate resolved addresses against public-network expectations instead of relying on the incomplete denylist. It rejects additional special-use IPv4 ranges before remote document or media fetching proceeds. All versions of BotKit up to 0.3.3 (in the 0.3.x branch) and 0.4.2 (in the 0.4.x branch) are affected. Patched releases are 0.3.4 and 0.4.3. For BotKit 0.4.x, update @fedify/botkit: npm update @fedify/botkit yarn upgrade @fedify/botkit pnpm update @fedify/botkit bun update @fedify/botkit deno update @fedify/botkit For BotKit 0.3.x, update @fedify/botkit: npm update @fedify/botkit@0.3.4 yarn upgrade @fedify/botkit@0.3.4 pnpm update @fedify/botkit@0.3.4 bun update @fedify/botkit@0.3.4 deno update @fedify/botkit@0.3.4 After updating, redeploy. The GitHub Security Advisory is GHSA-xw9q-2mv6-9fr8, and the CVE ID is CVE-2026-50131. See also fedify-dev/fedify#796 for Fedify's own announcement. BotKit security updates: 0.3.2 and 0.4.1

If you use BotKit, update to a patched release now. A private network protection bypass affects Fedify's remote document loading code, and it also affects BotKit which depends on Fedify.

The validatePublicUrl() function in Fedify, which ensures resources aren't fetched from private or loopback addresses, failed to correctly identify certain IPv6 literals. Specifically, URLs with private IPv4 addresses encoded as IPv4-mapped IPv6 literals (e.g., http://[::ffff:127.0.0.1]/) could bypass the check.

This vulnerability could allow an attacker to provide a malicious URL that bypasses security checks, potentially allowing them to make the bot fetch internal resources or interact with services on the private network that should not be accessible from the public internet.

All versions of BotKit up to 0.3.1 (in the 0.3.x branch) and 0.4.0 (in the 0.4.x branch) are affected. Patched releases are 0.3.2 and 0.4.1.

For BotKit 0.4.x, update @fedify/botkit:

npm  update  @fedify/botkit
yarn upgrade @fedify/botkit
pnpm update  @fedify/botkit
bun  update  @fedify/botkit
deno update  @fedify/botkit

For BotKit 0.3.x, update @fedify/botkit:

npm  update  @fedify/botkit@0.3.2
yarn upgrade @fedify/botkit@0.3.2
pnpm update  @fedify/botkit@0.3.2
bun  update  @fedify/botkit@0.3.2
deno update  @fedify/botkit@0.3.2

If you use other BotKit-related packages (e.g., @fedify/botkit-sqlite), update them as well. After updating, redeploy.

Thanks to Changkyun Kim (@me) for the report and responsible disclosure.

If anything is unclear, feel free to ask on GitHub Discussions or Matrix.

BotKit 0.4.0 is out! This release adds @fedify/botkit-postgres, a PostgreSQL-backed repository for deployments where SQLite isn't enough; a remote follow button on the bot profile page, so visitors can follow directly without manually searching from their own instance; and Session.republishProfile(), which lets you push profile changes to followers without waiting for the next post. It also upgrades the underlying Fedify dependency to 2.1.2, with a few small breaking API changes.

Big change coming to BotKit: multi-bot support! :botkit: :botkit: :botkit:

Currently, each BotKit instance can only run a single bot. We're redesigning the architecture to let you host multiple bots—both static and dynamically created—on a single instance.

The new API will look like this:

const instance = createInstance({ kv });
const greetBot = instance.createBot("greet", { ... });
const weatherBots = instance.createBot(async (ctx, id) => { ... });

Check out the full design:

BotKit security updates: 0.3.3 and 0.4.2 If you use BotKit, update to a patched release now. CVE-2026-42462 affects Fedify's Linked Data Signature handling, and BotKit inherits the exposure through its dependency on Fedify. The vulnerability allows an attacker to use JSON-LD graph-restructuring features—specifically @graph, @included, and @reverse—to reshape a signed ActivityPub activity without invalidating its Linked Data Signature. This can cause BotKit (via Fedify) to interpret a different ActivityPub object shape than was originally signed. The fix normalizes Linked Data Signature-verified activities against Fedify's local JSON-LD context before interpreting them, and rejects the JSON-LD constructs that enable the attack. All versions of BotKit up to 0.3.2 (in the 0.3.x branch) and 0.4.1 (in the 0.4.x branch) are affected. Patched releases are 0.3.3 and 0.4.2.

bot.onMention = async (session, message) => { await message.reply(textこんにちは、${message.actor}さん!); }; フェデレーション、HTTP Signatures、配送キューといったActivityPub周りの処理はFedifyがすべて引き受けます。ボットのロジックを書くだけです。

We're excited to announce the release of BotKit 0.3.0! This release marks a significant milestone as #BotKit now supports #Node.js alongside #Deno, making it accessible to a wider audience. The minimum required Node.js version is 22.0.0. This dual-runtime support means you can now choose your preferred #JavaScript runtime while building #ActivityPub #bots with the same powerful BotKit APIs.

One of the most requested features has landed: poll support! You can now create interactive polls in your #bot messages, allowing followers to vote on questions with single or multiple-choice options. Polls are represented as ActivityPub Question objects with proper expiration times, and your bot can react to votes through the new onVote event handler. This feature enhances engagement possibilities and brings BotKit to feature parity with major #fediverse platforms like Mastodon and Misskey.

// Create a poll with multiple choices
await session.publish(text`What's your favorite programming language?`, {
  class: Question,
  poll: {
    multiple: true, // Allow multiple selections
    options: ["JavaScript", "TypeScript", "Python", "Rust"],
    endTime: Temporal.Now.instant().add({ hours: 24 }),
  },
});

// Handle votes
bot.onVote = async (session, vote) => {
  console.log(`${vote.actor} voted for "${vote.option}"`);
};

The web frontend has been enhanced with a new followers page, thanks to the contribution from Hyeonseo Kim (@gaebalgom@hackers.pub)! The /followers route now displays a paginated list of your bot's followers, and the follower count on the main profile page is now clickable, providing better visibility into your bot's audience. This improvement makes the web interface more complete and user-friendly.

For developers looking for alternative storage backends, we've introduced the SqliteRepository through the new @fedify/botkit-sqlite package. This provides a production-ready SQLite-based storage solution with ACID compliance, write-ahead logging (WAL) for optimal performance, and proper indexing. Additionally, the new @fedify/botkit/repository module offers MemoryCachedRepository for adding an in-memory cache layer on top of any repository implementation, improving read performance for frequently accessed data.

This release also includes an important security update: we've upgraded to #Fedify 1.8.8, ensuring your bots stay secure and compatible with the latest ActivityPub standards. The repository pattern has been expanded with new interfaces and types like RepositoryGetMessagesOptions, RepositoryGetFollowersOptions, and proper support for polls storage through the KvStoreRepositoryPrefixes.polls option, providing more flexibility for custom implementations.

Coming soon in #BotKit 0.2.0: Native #quote post support!

We're excited to share a preview of the upcoming quoting features in BotKit 0.2.0. This update will make it easier for your bots to engage with quoted content across the fediverse.

The quoting feature set includes:

  • Detecting when someone quotes your bot's posts with the new Bot.onQuote event handler
  • Accessing quoted content through the Message.quoteTarget property
  • Creating quote posts using the quoteTarget option in Session.publish() and Message.reply() methods

Here's a quick example of how you can use the quote detection:

bot.onQuote = async (session, quote) => {
  // The quote parameter is a Message object representing the post that quoted your bot
  await quote.reply(text`Thanks for quoting my post, ${quote.actor}!`);

  // You can access the original quoted message
  const originalPost = quote.quoteTarget;
  console.log(`Original message: ${originalPost?.text}`);
};

And creating quote posts is just as simple:

// Quote in a new post
await session.publish(
  text`I'm quoting this interesting message!`,
  { quoteTarget: someMessage }
);

// Or quote in a reply
await message.reply(
  text`Interesting point! I'm quoting another relevant post here.`,
  { quoteTarget: anotherMessage }
);

Remember that quoting behavior may vary across different #ActivityPub implementations—some platforms like Misskey display quotes prominently, while others like Mastodon might implement them differently.

Want to try these features right now? You can install the development version from @fedify@jsr.io:

deno add jsr:@fedify/botkit@0.2.0-dev.90+d6ab4bdc

We're looking forward to seeing how you use these quoting capabilities in your bots!

// ボット用のカスタム絵文字を定義 const emojis = bot.addCustomEmojis({ botkit: { file: ${import.meta.dirname}/images/botkit.png, type: "image/png" }, fedify: { url: "https://fedify.dev/logo.png", type: "image/png" } });

// メッセージにカスタム絵文字を使用 await session.publish( textBotKit ${customEmoji(emojis.botkit)}は、Fedify ${customEmoji(emojis.fedify)}によって支えられています );

// 標準のUnicode絵文字でメッセージにリアクション await message.react(emoji👍);

// または定義したカスタム絵文字でリアクション await message.react(emojis.botkit);

// リアクションを認識して応答するボットを作成 bot.onReact = async (session, reaction) => { await session.publish( text${reaction.actor}さん、私のメッセージに${reaction.emoji}でリアクションしてくれてありがとうございます!, { visibility: "direct" } ); };

// ボットの投稿で他のメッセージを引用 await session.publish( textこの興味深い視点について答えます..., { quoteTarget: originalMessage } );

// ユーザーがボットのメッセージを引用した場合の処理 bot.onQuote = async (session, quoteMessage) => { await session.publish( text${quoteMessage.actor}さん、私の考えを共有してくれてありがとうございます!, { visibility: "direct" } ); };

Continuing our emoji reaction feature announcement, we're also introducing two new event handlers—Bot.onReact and Bot.onUnreact—that let your bot respond when users react to posts:

// When someone adds an emoji reaction to a post bot.onReact = async (session, reaction) => { // Only respond when the reaction is to your bot's post if (reaction.message.actor.id?.href === session.actorId.href) { console.log(${reaction.actor.preferredUsername} reacted with ${reaction.emoji});

// You can respond differently based on the emoji
if (reaction.emoji === "❤️") {
  await session.publish(
    text`Thanks for the love, ${reaction.actor}!`,
    { visibility: "direct" }
  );
}

} };

// When someone removes their emoji reaction bot.onUnreact = async (session, reaction) => { if (reaction.message.actor.id?.href === session.actorId.href) { console.log(${reaction.actor.preferredUsername} removed their ${reaction.emoji} reaction);

// Optional: respond to reaction removal
await session.publish(
  text`I noticed you removed your ${reaction.emoji} reaction, ${reaction.actor}.`,
  { visibility: "direct" }
);

} };

These event handlers open up interesting interaction possibilities—your bot can now track popular reactions, respond to specific emoji feedback, or create interactive experiences based on reactions.

Want to try these features now? You can install the development version from JSR today:

deno add jsr:@fedify/botkit@0.2.0-dev.86+cdbb52a2

// 봇의 커스텀 에모지 정의하기 const emojis = bot.addCustomEmojis({ botkit: { file: ${import.meta.dirname}/images/botkit.png, type: "image/png" }, fedify: { url: "https://fedify.dev/logo.png", type: "image/png" } });

// 메시지에 커스텀 에모지 사용하기 await session.publish( textBotKit ${customEmoji(emojis.botkit)}은 Fedify ${customEmoji(emojis.fedify)}의 지원을 받습니다 );

// 표준 유니코드 에모지로 메시지에 반응하기 await message.react(emoji👍);

// 또는 정의한 커스텀 에모지로 반응하기 await message.react(emojis.botkit);

// 반응을 인식하고 응답하는 봇 만들기 bot.onReact = async (session, reaction) => { await session.publish( text${reaction.actor}님, 제 메시지에 ${reaction.emoji} 반응을 남겨주셔서 감사합니다!, { visibility: "direct" } ); };

// 봇의 게시물에서 다른 메시지 인용하기 await session.publish( text이 흥미로운 관점에 대한 답변입니다..., { quoteTarget: originalMessage } );

// 사용자가 봇의 메시지를 인용할 때 처리하기 bot.onQuote = async (session, quoteMessage) => { await session.publish( text${quoteMessage.actor}님, 제 생각을 공유해 주셔서 감사합니다!, { visibility: "direct" } ); };

deno add jsr:@fedify/botkit@0.2.0

BotKit은 Temporal API(JavaScript에서 아직 시범적인 기능)를 사용하므로 deno.json에서 이를 활성화해야 합니다.

{ "imports": { "@fedify/botkit": "jsr:@fedify/botkit@0.2.0" }, "unstable": ["temporal"] }
