posted on the VCF site from someone in Russia

"Unfortunately, Russia is heading into very dark times.

We used to have good Internet here: fast, cheap, and mostly open. That is no longer the case. Real censorship has arrived in full force. YouTube, Discord, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and many other platforms have already been blocked.

And now it is getting worse. Full mobile Internet blackouts have started across the European part of the country. When this happens, the network is effectively switched into a whitelist mode: only pro-government sites and a couple of banks are accessible, while everything else simply disappears.

I have every reason to believe this is only the beginning, and that the same model will eventually be pushed onto wired home Internet as well.

I am in Siberia right now, where things are still somewhat better, and the whitelist system has not fully reached us yet. But that may not last."

@TerryHancock@realsocial.life @ricci@discuss.systems I have the equipment. It is a 3M tape so it will probably be fine. It will be digitized on my analog recovery set up and I'll use Len Shustek's readtape program to recover the data. The only issue right now is my workflow isn't a "while you wait" thing, so I need to pull all the pieces into one physical location and test everything before I tell Penny it's OK to come out. The whole process is test the condition on a tape retensioner. I'm hoping I don't have to bake it, since that takes a day, then digititze it, shuttle the 10s of gigabytes of samples to another machine to decode it. I want to skip the shuttle step and get the analyzer running on the digitizer.

@Savagejen@mastodon.social At Apple in the "Before Times" there were Staff Engineers who had that definition in their job description and were put there if they demonstrated they were capable of multi-tasking across projects. If you were a God-Level SE, like Ron Hochsprung, they made you a DEST. I don't know if they really survived His return, since that required the company not being siloed to the point where you knew who to ask and could go over and visit them without making them sign an "internal NDA" (don't ask...) #AppleLore

A walking tour of original Apple Buildings.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbCVETsmtoM

It was the "Good Earth" building because the Good Earth resturant (aka The Bad Dirt) was next door.

Catapult, started by ex Apple people, was in that building in the 90s and were somewhat infamous for making "cryo-bombs" with dry ice and liter soda bottles.

Did anyone out there work with the Steve Williams who worked on operating systems at Apple when he was at Sony or Palm? He passed in 2013 from complications from muscular distrophy, and I was going to write something about the projects I knew from him at Apple, then realized I don't know much about him after that. In the 00s, I recovered all his old magtapes for him, so I have I bunch of the papers he wrote about his Apple and Digitial Research work.

Truth spoken here https://wangcong.org/2026-06-30-why-i-stopped-arguing-with-people.html
A Geek’s Page

Why I Stopped Arguing With People

I am a software engineer, and I used to enjoy arguing with people for technical correctness. Code reviews, design meetings, mailing-list threads, dinner tables. If someone was wrong, I wanted them to know it, and I wanted them to know exactly why. I collected counterarguments the way I collected patches. I believed that if I just laid out the logic clearly enough, the other person would have no choice but to come around. Truth would win.

@kenshirriff Before the Alto, members of the SRI team (English, Duval, et al) built a system called Palos that was a reimplementation of NLS on DG Novas that has mostly been forgotten. The industrial design for those workstations including the keyboard/mouse/keyset were taken from that project and used for the Alto.
