@RadicalSocialWorker Before the newbies got their hands on those fancy CDs, we dignifiedly aged folk used to burn these things.

@robertpi@functional.cafe Unfortunately the cancel window was the first 12 hours, after which we charged you for the year. Should you want to cancel, you can call a phone number listed on a phone book somewhere between 04:03 and 04:06 on Sunday-Monday night. The service is only available in Mongolian.

@ShadowJonathan@tech.lgbt I guess I'm doing it right, when the advertisers are already actively attacking all the ways I avoid watching the ads, including attempts at blocking ad blockers or just trying to win me over with sad pleas.

@teotwaki@mastodon.online I'm actually going to leave that in even when the spare arrives, as I'm generally curious to see how various materials survive real world use. The return spring in the part is very weak, as is the solenoid itself, I can stop the solenoid from moving with just keeping a finger there against the plunger. Since the coilstop (the part that stops the plunger) is integrated in the bottom, I can only assume the material has been extremely bad. There are similar brackets in strong and often used coils, such as bumpers and I have machines from the 70s that still have the original brackets in use. There's absolutely no reason for a rarely used, weak coil to break its bracket like this.

@awilbert@mastodon.social This has been the stupidest thing I've come across in a while and I do come across stupid stuff daily. This is one of those cases, where someone with absolutely no basic logic or critical thinking abilities tries to come up with a silver bullet solution to a problem where the genie has already out the bottle. I can think of so many ways to trivially circumvent this law and its limitations that it literally hurts. While an average innocent consumer is obviously hurt by all the locking up and limiting this will obviously cause, an actual criminal will just go "huh, I better drive to the next state and bring myself an unlimited one". Or just reflash the thing with unlimited software, that will be guaranteed to surface very soon after. I also hope they also include all the metal work tools in this limitation so no one can produce any metal guns out of raw materials.

@rpsu@mas.to Oon Espanjaa tehny Duolingossa n. 5 vuotta, olen silmäillyt tuota sitten kun nykyinen ennakkoon maksettu tilaus päättyy.

@marjolica @cstross I've heard people calling rewriting flash memory as burning too, but technically it differs from the old days where it literally toasted the single use ROM chip when EEPROMs weren't a thing yet. Naturally there's a lot of ambiguity when people learn kind-of meanings to stuff, like learning you "burn an upgrade" to a classic arcade game and they they proclaim they "burned an upgrade" to their Windows, much to the confusion to basically any IT person.

@cstross@wandering.shop Wait until she learns about burning ROMs too! It's the witchcraft that brings pinball and video game software up to date!
