In case anyone needs a picture of some woolly Mangalica pigs right now. They're far too friendly

These Cladonia lichen always remind me of golf tees. Ironically, these ones were beside a path that crosses a local golf course. Is that where they grow them?

Glad that we got a clear, sunny afternoon today. Near the edge of a golf course near Studland there's a little colony of native wild daffodils, many of which (as in this photo) are double forms.
#etymology note for those interested in such matters: "daffodil" comes by a circuitous route from Ancient Greek "asphodel", which in modern languages now refers to some rather different species.

Lesser celandines starting to flower in Dorset this week, glossy yellow like buttercups (which are closely related). Different number of petals on these two.

Blackthorn, I think (the sepals clasping the petals, rather than curling away from them)

I almost never bother looking at daisies, but this only-slightly-bedraggled one was putting on a brave show. I was also quite pleased with the phone camera (which is nothing fancy but it came out not too badly)

Highlight of our #wildflower searching this week were a few of the first flowers of Early Spider-orchid on the Purbeck coast. Very many more rosettes, spikes and buds yet to open up, so it was exciting to finally find a few flowers. This time last week, we couldn't find any. Soon there will be thousands.

This time of year it is such a delight to see the return of familiar flowers. First returners this week: comfrey and wild carrot.

OnePlus 6 or 6T are pretty cheap on eBay. #PostmarketOS works pretty well, or at least usefully, on them

Since it's the NHS, may I suggest PALS? Wrong records need to be corrected

A definitive article is Hoffman's article

Or by “sources” did you mean Avestan texts in transliteration? (can't help with that, I'm afraid)

Well you originally specified “consensual”, so yeah probably not Iraq nor Iran? Consensual is a high bar for all modern nations I think

I had a language consultant for a university linguistics class and a research project, who was a fluent speaker of Sanskrit -- in two registers (archaic, formal vs. everyday, informal - a more modern, simplified version). He had hung out with Pandits from an early age, and also had an enthusiastic Spoken Sanskrit teacher at school. I can testify that Spoken Skt is definitely a thing!

The last UK monarch to be removed by Parliament was less than 100 years ago (Edward VIII). No new law was required, and his head remained attached to his body, but he was exiled.

Yes pretty good, but two misconceptions: 1) Neanderthals were also Homo sapiens. 2) Nasal sounds are not due to or more frequent with big noses

There are many different varieties of English. The description you give suggests what is often referred to in linguistics as “Canadian raising” (before [s], e.g., also “right” vs. “ride” -- how about for you?). It's not just Canadian, though. Let's appreciate such diversity!

@rbreich@masto.ai So from the UK (where I am not that keen on monarchy at all), the whole US "no kings" thing seems totally anachronistic actually, since most places with kings have made them no more powerful than flags. A better campaign slogan, imho, would be be just "no dictators", right?

Yes, correct: the Norman-French loanwords in English are generally “learnèd” e.g. courtly/posh, legalese, scientific, and/or more specialized, whereas the words inherited from Anglo-Saxon are generally more ordinary, colloquial, streetwise, sometimes vulgar, acquired earlier in life, and used more frequently.

Very relatable. In my department (before I retired) we definitely did all aspects of computing (quite intensive scientific computing) better with a small, diversely-skilled in-house IT team than later, when it became more of a generic, uniform, more outsourced “service” - and we did it all at lower cost on site

“British” will include Scottish English speakers, many of whom DO make that distinction, whereas most other British English speakers don't make that distinction
