RESEARCH | Spotting plant stress from space

#ESA has launched FLEX, a satellite mission designed to measure chlorophyll fluorescence from orbit.

ULiège was involved in the development of the satellite’s measuring instrument and will carry out reference drone flights to link the orbital signal to ground measurements.

The resulting data are expected to support crop-yield forecasting and to improve the representation of the carbon cycle in climate models.

RESEARCH | Rethinking radiotherapy to better fight pancreatic cancer

In a landmark review published in Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology, researchers from GIGA and Liège University Hospital, together with colleagues from Gustave Roussy and Fox Chase Cancer Center, propose a new therapeutic perspective: viewing radiotherapy as a tool capable of stimulating the immune system and enhancing the efficacy of immunotherapy.

RESEARCH | Molecular biology
Researchers have captured, at near-atomic resolution, the trans-spliceosome, a molecular machine essential to the parasites behind sleeping sickness, Chagas' disease and leishmaniasis. It does not exist in this form in humans, which makes it a promising drug target.

RESEARCH | Triple-negative breast cancer

In a study published in the Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer, researchers from the GIGA Institute (ULiège) demonstrate that methylglyoxal, a byproduct of tumor metabolism, contributes to the creation of an environment that favors the progression of triple-negative breast cancer and resistance to immunotherapy.

RESEARCH 🌳 | Climate subtly shapes carbon stocks in mature tropical forests

An international study shows that, in mature tropical forests, climate influences carbon stocks primarily through stand structure. As its effects on the various components of this structure tend to cancel each other out, the relationship between climate and carbon remains difficult to detect and varies significantly from one region to another.

A 700-tonne crane, a huge vacuum chamber (100 tons) sliced into three sections. A few centimeters of clearance through the roof.

On 25 August, the CSL (Centre Spatial de Liège) pulled off one of its most delicate lifts ever: installing FOCAL7, soon one of Europe's largest vacuum chambers. 🛰

FOCAL 7 will serve both Earth-observation missions and purely scientific missions, across a wide range of wavelengths.

2021 floods Five years ago, the July 2021 floods devastated the Vesdre valley and western Europe: 200+ deaths, tens of billions in damage. Since then, engineers at ULiege's HECE lab have run four studies to understand what happened, and to respond better next time: reconstructing the flood, validating models, mapping debris under bridges, and pinpointing what really damages homes. 👉 https://www.news.uliege.be/cms/c_20690914/en/the-2021-floods-five-years-of-research-by-the-hece-laboratory-to-better-understand-and-anticipate-extreme-floods
