Apple really needs a master switch to turn off Apple Intelligence + delete the models. 256GB Mac Minis are suffering.

@Negahyphen@infosec.exchange Moving to Linux Mint is the right move overall, but just for fun, If you're powershell saavy you can have some (emphasis on "Some") more granular control if you check for/install updates via the pswindowsupdate module. Some examples: #check for updates (and don't install them): get-windowsupdate #Install updates (it will prompt for consent for each entry, allowing one to skip): get-windowsupdate -download -install #If you want to check for updates from Microsoft Update: Get-WindowsUpdate -MicrosoftUpdate -Verbose Doing this along with a combination of disabling wuauserv can maybe ease the pain, but I agree overall that MS has made this entire process unacceptable and stupid. You made the right move by just exiting the OS.

@Javvad@infosec.exchange Why is it the Microsoft 365 director making this statement and not the ACTUAL head of Windows? Also under what actual guidelines/standards is the three day thing coming from? Or is it them just panicking without merit? Also is Microsoft prepared to release immediate fixes for the frequent situation where their patches aren't tested and break more than they fix?)

I love when a vulnerability scan (cough TENABLE cough) is just outright belligerently false on a scan. Not only is the vulnerability 5+ years old, the fix is known and documented, but Nessus be like "there is no fix for this" um excuse me, solved problem half a decade ago. Fix your database...

Old greybeard Napster-era complaint - when making mp3/ogg/flac/whatever files, don't name them with weird characters that don't work well in every OS. Keep it simple.

Being a sysadmin is like the Wacky Workbench levels in Sonic CD - the goal (getting things done) isn't far away, but literally everything is trying to bounce you a thousand miles away into dead-ends and go-back-to-start loops.

macOS patches way too slow. The check takes forever, the download takes forever, and the reboot is unnecessarily complicated and long to stand back up. Linux and even Windows go so much faster in comparison.

Of the most unhinged useless features Apple could work on, the "AI will reset your passwords" thing they are putting into iCloud Keychain has to be at the top of the list. I wouldn't ever recommend to ANYONE to run that, and from what I'm hearing, it doesn't even work all that well to begin with (shocker). So glad I use KeePass instead...

Trying to reload my balance for a $highwaytolltransponderthinghere and the site seemingly keeps blocking my system from accessing it after logging in. First off, the page is incredibly slow to even log in and work (a great confidence booster for having to input PCI), and seemingly as a reward for waiting for the page to load, I get some idiotically configured IDS going "we blocked you for security reasons" - I think it's blanket blocking Linux OSes and security forks of Firefox like LibreWolf. That is NOT how things should be. The more secure configuration should never be blocked.

iPadOS feels like drunk macOS. Cmd H is effectively minimize….but so is Cmd W? Sometimes? Minimize might also have the same functionality. Who knows? Apps don’t “close” on this OS, they are put in stasis…unless they don’t.

If I were Microsoft, I'd be sweating it right now. In July they were all happy and giddy about fixing 500+ vulnerabilities with AI, but I bet most of them weren't even real and now they have a big list of unknown problems (maybe sleeper cell malware) in the OS code. https://www.theregister.com/security/2026/08/03/ai-slop-pollutes-the-cve-pipeline-with-fake-vulns/5282462

Does Apple even know how to host email? iCloud Mail - if you create inbox rules in iCloud for the web, the rules are only viewable and editable there - they don't even appear in Mail.app on macOS! Let alone Thunderbird or anywhere else. That is insane.

I'm a few months late to this but I saw a little article that Donald Fagen has quietly retired. That's fine, but I'm just bittersweet about it, right as I catch up on all his solo work along with the rest of Steely Dan's stuff, he's winding down. At least he seems to be making a few silly appearances on Amy Helm's Instagram now though, which is amusing.
