For #bench and #openStreetMap enthusiasts a fascinating in depth look at benches in US🇺🇸 cities: https://placesjournal.org/article/the-disappearance-of-the-public-bench/

Most intriguing for me was learning about riots when Central Park NYC introduced private chair rental. Loads of other aspects covered: removal of benches because of homeless people, NYC new roll-out.

Really amplifies that a simple thing like mapping a bench can be useful in a multitude of ways.

@watmildon@en.osm.town hate to say it, but it's not a shrub, but a large herb! The leaves dies back completely in winter, and largely rot away. No woody parts at all. It and one of it's hybrids have recently been put on the banned list in the UK (as potentially highly invasive).

@opencage There's a long tradition of spoof maps of which The New Yorker cover "The View of the World from 9th Avenue" is probably the most famous. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/View_of_the_World_from_9th_Avenue Several other lovely examples in Peter Gould's "Mental Maps".

@opencage I think there's a related one on a pub in Leicester, the Bridle Lane Tavern. The street still exists, but no longer goes past the pub. Of course the pub is also named after a street which vanished in the 1800s : https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ckg13m8ymy5o Need to update #OpenStreetMap (which, awkwardly has 2 addresses for the pub)

The Bridle Lane Tavern has been an ale house since the 1840s but the owners want to redevelop it.

@opencage The first one of these I learnt of was the Elephant contour line, seen in a map exhibition at The British Library in the early '80s. Covered here by Strange Maps: https://bigthink.com/strange-maps/670-nil-how-to-hide-an-elephant-the-1923-gold-coast-survey/ I'd missed the Swisstopo ones but there's a good collection on the Ordnance Survey map of the Isle of Wight: mainly draughtsmans' names hidden in cliffs.

@mdione @not2b @gedankenstuecke Yeah, that's why I mentioned the country. Originally it was the same here, but the.cost of rolling out 4G & 5G persuaded the government to allow sharing. I suspect the economics are similar everywhere, so it might change.

@SylvieLorxu@chaos.social not just tech my Scottish godson started university at 17. Consequently he couldn't sign up for loads of student societies because he was under 18 and they would have to comply with child protection legislation. No sailing, although he'd sailed dinghy and yachts for 9 years by then, no kendo, etc, etc.

What a surprise! UK Biobank personal data compromised: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/apr/23/private-health-records-uk-biobank-chinese-website-alibaba In my experience UK Health researchers are somewhat naive about the risks of cybercrime and the actual degree of anonymity afforded by psedoanomisation. The late Ross Anderson and his group had many striking examples, for instance https://www.lightbluetouchpaper.org/2014/04/04/latest-health-privacy-scandal/

@Zekovski @opencage You've reminded me of a shop (now closed) which had 4 different addresses when I surveyed it. In a small shopping mall (arcade) with entrances from the arcade & the street. The street is one without a name because the names belong to either side (name:left, name:right in #OpenStreetMap).

@trigpoint @opencage And actually the Lower Willow Street address is the current one despite Camra etc. Non-open source of Find My Address, checked because uprns seem to share postcode with other addresses on street. See https://uprn.uk/postcode/le12hp which I presume uses the NSUL UPRN to Postcode lookup.

@not2b @gedankenstuecke Here in the UK the actual network used is often different from who bills you. For instance I'm currently connected to Vodafone (probably because there's a 5G master 200 m away) but have an EE contract. I assume emergency calls will always be network agnostic. So I don't think there's a need to try & capture this detail in #OpenStreetMap.

@regendans@todon.eu bit sceptical that the licence fee was the main reason. IIRC desktop software was around $300-$500 for single licences at the time. So perhaps $21 million w/o discount (plus support @ 10-15% of list). Losing the need for PCs may have been more of a consideration. UK (and European) prices would have been £300-£500 (i.e., 60% higher). It was (is?) common practice to charge foreign subsidiaries & resellers full US list price per licence.

@alan@en.osm.town Brittany undoubtedly has *LOTS* of hamlets. Many rural communes have complex road signs as one enters showing how to get to all/most of the hamlets in the commune. (I'll try & fish out and example later today). My late uncle lived in the hamlet of Koatilouarn in the commune of Plounévézel, Finisterre. It has about 20 houses (only numbered in recent years), and despite being in walking distance of Carhaix-Plougher, only got mains water & sewerage in the '80s. E&OE

@zool@en.osm.town At that point realised that this could be a more sensible & responsive model to fund map updates. About the same time I learnt one could get a CD-ROM of all 1:50k maps for £15 provided they were used with the JNCC Recorder package : thus providing a good idea of what the true distribution costs for map data might be. But all-in-all I was only thinking about making national data more readily available. (I really should not have held off buying a GPS for 10+ years)

@ultrazool@mastodon.scot Might be no consolation, but I don't think you should frame this as being on "the wrong path". The grant award process heavily favours incumbents, even when the awarding body is actively trying to avoid doing so.

@zool@en.osm.town How much of this was written pre-#OpenStreetMap? I'm presuming all of it given publishing lead times and no mention of OSM (plus your early toot about being in O'Reilly's office in 2003). About 20 years ago was when I started falling out of love with the #OrdnanceSurvey : I bought a new 1:25k map and it still had the same inaccuracies of my earlier copy from 30 years earlier. A bit later learnt that the council had made the Wildlife Trust pay for a full survey to get planning consent. 1/2

@zool@en.osm.town @gklyne@indieweb.social @danbri@mastodon.social Now I want to know about deeper antecedents! In early September 2003 I had a week in the Lower Engadin. In the evening I spent time sketching out ideas about how one might explore the rich heritage of the Alps. Location was critical: e.g., this was the viewpoint that Segantini used for the painting "Punishment of Lust" hanging in room X of the Walker Art gallery. These other artefacts encompass that view etc. Sounds like "Gonzo Mapping" would have been just the thing.

@zool@en.osm.town It's quite likely I read this article at the time, but most of it would have not meant very much. The corporate world I inhabited at the time was full of "web strategies" which meant crappy cut-down c/s software running in the browser. The arrival of the web knocked back the presentation of business intelligence back about 5 years (especially data-driven maps). Besides which my overriding problem was daily munging of 50 Gbytes of accounting data in 2 hrs.

@amapanda@en.osm.town the problem is really that #OpenStreetMap doesn't provide a means of annotating specific element versions. Instead the version ratchets up. It's just about possible in the existing schema if one added another table with a composite key of element, version and unique annotation id. Annotations could still be key=value pairs, but would not be editable and would not be visible when version number is bumped. Probably messes with the basic data model too much though

RE: @ultrazool@mastodon.scot

Thinking about @zool@en.osm.town's experience proposing an idea to #ARIA. I still think that there's scope for completely different ways to innovation funding. ARIA have a saner process than many, but I always liked the late Donald Braben's approach:l. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Braben.

(Note: My Dad received BP Venture funding from Braben around 1990.)
