Today is the feast of St Hildegard of Bingen.
Abbess, mystic, composer, physician, and the earliest conlanger known to history. Hence regarded as the patron saint of conlanging

After much cursing of MediaWiki's table syntax, I've just published Kipin's pronoun system.

I think that Agatha Christie and other "golden age" mystery writers would have found the true crime genre highly distasteful. Since they were writing murders as puzzles for entertainment, they deliberately made the crimes implausible to avoid ghoulishness

A professor of entomology lamented that students were attracted to his course more by the prestige of his reputation than genuine interest in the subject matter. At the beginning of term, his class was full of obsequious toadies, but by the end they were sick of ants.

During the First World War, the British Empire recruited soldiers from its subject peoples in Africa and India. Tolkien encountered such soldiers during his own military service. What he thought of using subject peoples like this can be inferred from the fact that in The Lord of the Rings, he ascribes the practice to Mordor.

@phildini @civicband The approach I used when I did this for a client

  1. Use OpenCV to split the table into cells
  2. Run OCR on each cell individually
  3. Use Pandas to assemble the contents of the cells into a dataframe

Politicians always try to appeal to the supporters of the party they're most afraid of. So, at the local elections, make sure the government are looking over their left shoulder, not their right shoulder.

The ethical character of a technology is a reflection of the people who drive its development.
There's nothing inherently wrong with technology that can adapt and learn. But the field of AI is currently dominated by some very toxic people and organisations. That situation is in turn the product of an economic and social system that rewards selfishness.

@scruss If I remember correctly, a trademark may be invalidated if the owner fails to defend it (cf the TARDIS). Now. Speculative Grammarian (https://specgram.com) published wug jokes for years and Jackie Berkow Gleeson took no action. Would that be evidence of failure to defend the trademark?

@kechpaja Yes, Turkish uses so many bound affixes that a single word can express an entire, fairly complex, sentence, but isn't usually described as polysynthetic. So what's the difference?

@kechpaja One question is what level of agglutination you need to reach before a language counts as polysynthetic. Is Turkish polysynthetic? The answer may depend on whether or not you are one of those people who we could not turn into a city-dweller.
