Proton is generally regarded as a secure email service and this might be true regarding encryption and data storage. But now Proton has collaborated with the FBI and handed over payment data to identify the owner of an email account.
And guess what … The owner of the account was not a paedophile or a terrorist, it was an activists connected to the protest movement „Stop Cop City“
Of course, Proton acted accordingly to Swiss law but considering that this not a single case and Proton is always promoting their location in Switzerland as trustworthy, I would recommend to use something else, probably not even email.
But if you’re using it, follow some basic rules:
1. No recovery data like email or phone numbers.
2. Use a VPN (keep in mind that the VPN provider knows who you are and that a VPN might not be as secure as you think)
3. Don’t use banking accounts for payment. If possible, use Monero or Cash.
4. Don’t use your secret email for anything else. The more often you use it, the more traces you leave.
5. Consider using a messenger for sensitive communication. My personal recommendation is Molly.
@Tutanota@mastodon.social How often per year do you get these requests from authorities and how often do you follow them?

I’m seriously thinking about a capsule wardrobe. Dressing the same every day completely removes the hassle of deciding what to wear each morning and worrying if it matches … 🤔
This morning, I read an article in the newspaper which must appear weird to anynone who's interested in the topic.
It started like: "For a long time, the messenger service Signal was considered a secure alternative to WhatsApp by many consumers. However, following the phishing attacks on the platform targeting high-ranking politicians, the question now arises as to how secure the service really is. Those wishing to use alternatives should inform themselves beforehand."
The article then goes on to list and explain Threema, Wire, and Telegram.
This demonstrates the editor's absolute incompetence. Telegram as an "alternative" to Signal, seriously? When we look what happened to some members of the German Bundestag, we see a targeted phishing attack where the attackers claimed to be the Signal support, pretending to require an access code to "verify" the account. And as was only to be expected, several people – including the President of the Bundestag – fell for it.
Now, the President of the German Bundestag (yes, the President who fell for the phishing attack) recommends using Wire instead of Signal.
But changing the tool doesn't solve the problem which is mostly sitting in front of the computer or smartphone. It's not Signal's fault, it's the user.
To claim Signal is insecure is as absurd as blaming a locksmith for a break-in where the homeowner left the key under the welcome mat for the burglars to find.
It seems to me that this entire affair is being weaponized to smear Signal's reputation.
@signalapp@mastodon.world I hope you have strategies how to fight this.
Yesterday I ran pkgbasify on my FreeBSD 15.0 server. Seems like everything went well. Next step: updating to 15.1
Maybe a task for next weekend…
Wann hört das eigentlich endlich auf? Die Chatkontrolle scheint ein ewiger Wiedergänger zu sein. Gerade beerdigt, schon steht sie wieder auf und streckt ihre gierigen Klauen aus.
