@benroyce@mastodon.social I have a question about the recent ruling about how digitising books is transformative by itself now. Does that mean that places like the internet archive are in the clear to do that too? Scan and upload any book? I haven’t seen this talked about yet.

@Blender “We should have opened up more conversation and perspectives from contributors before making this decision, and for that we are sorry.” We’re so sorry in fact, that we listened to how our community didn’t want us to take money from a company that contributes to war and violence, as well as builds its machine from the plagiarism of blender modellers and artists - and we’re happy to announce that we will be accepting money from Anthropic! What the hell. It’s very impressive that this corporate pr spin is being accepted by other people here though. :floofMug:

@masek@infosec.exchange this relies on the assumption that these things are actually useful enough to justify the exponential burning of money on them, and secondarily that there is actually enough capital in the world to do that. Which there isn’t - mathematically the current expenditure growth cannot continue. Per Cory Doctorow’s recent analysis it would require 2x the whole world’s current loan output to keep this going for another 12 months. It’s not theoretically unsustainable, it’s fully economically unsustainable, which is why the big 3 ai players are setting up exit strategies by making the stock market hold the bag. But also, this is all relying on LLMs being useful. 30 trillion dollars/year useful. Which they aren’t, and will never be. Unless a billion people all spend 30k a year on ai from now until forever. So no, I reject the narrative of this shit being inevitable. Which company is going to lose a billion dollars a year updating their models so that their cloud ai/ local models don’t become outdated, creating deprecated code that can’t use new frameworks, if they cannot turn a profit from it?

@routpatt @Haijo7 @Craigp I think that if a FOSS project has an acronym name that’s a slur (putting aside the other connotation for the word) then not only is it going to be broadly unappealing to users, but it’s going to affect who wants to contribute to the project too. I feel like a lot of people here are missing that context because the word is less commonly used these days. But if you look in a dictionary you’ll see that the first definition for the word is something along the lines of ‘an offensive term for a disabled person’. Blender and git, by contrast are just regular words. Git is an insult, but not a slur, so. Having that as a project name would discourage any good devs from contributing, and id argue that played a part in how it’s still not a great piece of software to use after 20+ years.

@Some_Emo_Chick@mastodon.social right?? I love mint. I tried using Linux a few times in years past and always found it too hard for daily personal use, even though I’m from a computery background. Mint was a game changer once I tried it. I know a lot of Linux folk call it a ‘beginners’ distro, but mint is so easy and nice to use that I have no desire to change. I don’t want to engage in battle with my home computer :floofLol:

Left twitch running all day and night (as is customary), one of the raid trains ended up on a big streamer. Very pretty and well rigged live2D model, so I tuned in for a little bit.

Popular culture/mainstream twitch streaming is really, really gross. The focus of conversation for the 5 minutes I tuned in was entirely about getting subs. buy more subs. Wow you guys have bought a lot of subs. Buy more subs. The counter on the screen shows they're nearly at 6000 of them (this is a subathon, after all)

Between talking about how people should buy more subs, get the hype train higher, the only other thing they make sure to mention is 'I love you' - so many times

The hype train ends, they switch to words on stream, say that they're going to bed - 'but while I'm away, as you're lying in bed, remember I love you!'

I cannot understand why there are so many people out there who enjoy this? Doesn't this give everybody else the ick?

I love you!

@pixelfed@mastodon.social this reads like somebody with maturity issues wrote it. Also at least export the thing into a pdf first, the squiggly lines and text cursor are still visible :floofLol: More importantly, Zuckerberg didn’t build Facebook because he believed in anything, at least not anything good - initially the project was to rate college girls on their appearances

@masek@infosec.exchange it’s a good take. I feel like people are generally split between these two extremes (fast recovery vs slow recovery) and it’s entirely possible the way I see it is wishful thinking- it’s all hypothetical until after this market has some kind of correction.

@BoneHouseWasps@beige.party unfortunately, there’s not the same options for being an artist on the internet as there were 10+ years ago (as a kid or an adult) I grew up with deviantart (which is now a website that scrapes everybody’s uploads automatically for their built in ai tools, among other issues - I don’t recommend it) DA was great at the time. Amino art was good, but is now pretty much dead. But there’s not really any giant community art sites that are built around community anymore, just around financial transactions (kofi, vgen, and so on) I might get eaten alive in the replies for saying this, but one of the best options for what you’re asking as of right now, is bluesky. Bluesky has a much larger artist community on it than masto, and a much nicer one than twitter (as nearly every artist I’ve seen that dislikes bigotry and ai has moved or at the very least duplicated their accounts to bluesky) It also has age restriction stuff that can hide nsfw content and block DMs too. Social media isn’t great as a replacement for dedicated art community sites :floofMug: Other places younger people like to upload art now are instagram or tiktok (I personally won’t touch those with a very long pole) so I feel bsky is a good middle ground for not being awful + having enough artists on it of whatever niche you’re interested in. You could also have a look at Toyhou.se, it’s an art gallery type site where you can also trade characters, with lots of people from different fandoms on it. You need an invite code to make an account, but it’s been like that for so long that it’s pretty easy to get a code (I can get you a code if you are interested in the site)

@jk actually… some coffee brands actually do that :floofLol: it’s not sawdust, but it may as well be - it’s a hardier (and worst tasting nearly all the time) plant variety called robusta. Some coffee brands mix in 20% to save on costs, and try to advertise it as a plus :floofMug:

@Ashedryden@xoxo.zone what are you talking about :afloofLoad: please point to the period of time that Microsoft /the company/ had morals and at what point you think it abandoned them. Words matter, Microsoft is a company. A company cannot have morals. Its entire goal has been to maximise its profits, for the entire lifetime of the company. It may have enacted some policies for hiring or manufacturing that were ethically better in the past, but every time has been in service of greater profitability, nothing else.

@Pepijn@mastodon.online I don’t think your hypothesis will end up being correct. Most people who own even one cow are likely farmers, and farmers (despite the image that they project) tend to be quite wealthy. Cows cost a lot to buy, cost a lot to look after, and need a lot of land. Most of the population aren’t wealthy or in close contact with any wealthy people, so it’s common sense that no - most people haven’t sat on a cow.

Sadly I was right about the Gameoverse trailer. The pilot is bad. Or worse, it's boring.

Egoraptor and Rubberninja don't have any experience writing /anything/ interesting. Why anybody was excited about this is beyond me.

The worst part is, I have no doubt this will become Glitch's biggest financial success. These characters were born to become inoffensive funko pops.

@masek@infosec.exchange if any of the 3 big ai providers collapse, the pressure on ram supplies is released and the impact begins to subside. These things are intrinsically linked. Local model performance is a direct result of the work that is done for the frontier models. Additionally, coding and news models require updating as an unavoidable fact. Core point: this level of market pressure cannot continue. On-prem being better value than renting compute isn’t going away.

@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place (preface, can see the edit, did already tell blender) I’m not sure why people who were initially against blender taking the anthropic money are treating this as a good thing - they’re still taking the anthropic money, so they haven’t listened to the community, just changed the PR spin on it. Idk I wouldn’t like. Give them praise and a heart for this?

@ottaross@mastodon.social I’ve tried to switch to DDG a few times over the years and I always end up switching back. Their biggest weakness is that they pull from the bing index, which can make it harder or impossible to actually get results if you do any searches outside of common, mainstream queries. I love the philosophy, sadly the tool is just bad :floofCry:
