FreeBSD 15.1 on ThinkPad T480 impression after 2 weeks on the new release:

  • Stable 5 GHz WiFi with several hundreds Mbps (native iwlwifi driver)

  • Hardware Video acceleration working in Chromium (via libva-intel-media-driver)

  • Factorio running absolutely stable with 60FPS

Battery life after powerd optimizations: decent. Way over 6h (with dual batteries)

Noteworthy: Sound is working perfectly via pulseaudio Webcam works perfectly via webcamd WiFi, Ethernet and Docking works flawless Virtualization via BHYVE working out of the box.

This is a perfectly usable setup! I don't currently miss anything.

Practical FreeBSD hint: Want to see how much traffic your PF host handles via IPv4 vs IPv6?

pfctl -si | awk '
/Bytes (In|Out)/ {v4+=$3; v6+=$4}
END {
t=v4+v6
printf "IPv4: %.2f GiB (%.1f%%)\nIPv6: %.2f GiB (%.1f%%)\n",
v4/2^30, 100*v4/t, v6/2^30, 100*v6/t
}'

Example from one of my servers:
IPv4: 0.22 GiB (42.1%)
IPv6: 0.30 GiB (57.9%)

The counters cover traffic since PF was last started or the host rebooted.

Also: "in" is a reserved keyword in awk. Ask me how I found out. 😅

Successfully updated my ThinkPad T480 to FreeBSD 15.1-RC1 :freebsd_logo:

First impression: Solid release!

- WiFi (Intel AX210) stable on 5 GHz (802.11AC) with expected WAN speed.
- Graphics, Audio, USB-C Dock all working fine.
- Factorio Space-Age running perfectly smooth.

All running super well and without unexpected issues :-) Yay!

I use FreeBSD jails more way over a decade now. Today I learned, that I can simply do “jexec $jail_name” without a parameter and get a sh shell in the jail. You don’t actually need to put “sh” at the end of the command 🤯😂

Latest quarterly FreeBSD package upgrade broke my Nextcloud 😮‍💨

Post mortem: The new version of php85-pdo_pgsql is now compiled against PostgreSQL 18, not 17. So pkg upgrade removed postgresql17-server, leaving Nextcloud dysfunctional without a database.

Solution:

  • Reinstalled postgresql17-server
  • Dumped the db with pg_dump
  • Installed postgresql18-server & php85-pdo_pgsql
  • Copied over pg_hba.conf & postgresql.conf
  • Created empty db/user in PG18
  • Imported the db dump
  • Ran occ maintenance:data-fingerprint

Restarted php-fpm & nginx

All fine again. But that was unpleasant 🙂

Successfully virtualized a MikroTik Router ("Cloud Hosted Router") on FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE with BHYVE :bhyve:

Works absolutely great (920 Mbit/s throughput on a 1GBps license!)

Nice! NAT64 in action, My IPv6-only jail can successfully talk with Github. No tayga, just the new "af-to" feature, that the "pf" firewall got in 15.0-RELEASE:

pass in quick on bastille0 inet6 from $jail_net to 64:ff9b::/96 \
af-to inet from ($ext_if) keep state

This is genuinly nice! 🙂

It’s bigger on the inside.

Successfully trapped a Bhyve hypervisor :bhyve: inside a VNET Jail on FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE :freebsd_logo:

Host -> Jail (named 'tardis') -> Hypervisor -> Virtual Machine.

Complete with working dual-stack IPv4/IPv6 routed via pf on the host. Why? Because I needed to isolate the VMs from the host's network, and I apparently enjoy fighting deep-nested devfs rulesets on a Friday night.

Just spent way too long wrestling with a 400-line pf.conf and asymmetrical routing. 😵‍💫

The culprit? Classic rule ordering. A slightly too broad rule (with quick) near the top was happily catching traffic and creating states without the reply-to option before my intended rule could even look at it.

The packets were flowing, just... not back the right way. Debugging that was significantly harder than I expected.

I am officially logging off to take a nap. 💤

@psyhackological@fosstodon.org Yes. And FreeBSD can run Linux binaries, using the Linuxlator (linux64.ko) translation layer. Works perfectly 🙂

@t0maz@floss.social @freezr I'm well aware of how FreeBSD package management works, thanks! But when a standard upgrade removes a running production database server over a PHP dependency bump and causes unexpected downtime, I’m still going to call it 'broken' until the manual migration is finished. Just sharing the joy of the sysadmin life. ✨

@db_geek@norden.social Yeah that wasn't ideal. But I could solve it in approx. 20 minutes via dump+restore. The php-pdo package now is linked to postgres18.. But that could have been avoided by using the FreeBSD Ports system (/usr/ports) where you have control about the dependencies of software. Not using ports was a trade-off, that I was aware which consequences it implies and I accepted that.

@Saupreiss@pfalz.social 😅 Ich habe einfach den Hypervisor (bhyve) auch in ein Jail rein gesperrt, anstatt ihn auf dem Host laufen zu lassen .. (Ja, das geht xD)

Replying to
