@h2onolan @cR0w I firmly believe the only good design decision in MS Teams is that the menu says "Quit Teams" and not "Exit" as Microsoft has traditionally used. It may be wishful thinking, but I hope that someone spent significant social capital to argue for that choice, knowing it would be the only positive association with the software for many users.

@millerdl@mathstodon.xyz I regret to inform you that the Dave-o-meter was in use by a friend twenty years ago to describe their CS program when I was considering applying. But I am fully in support of continuing it's use to point out how bad a meeting might be.

@DG1JAN Great idea for an unun to use a Wago connector. But yes, this tracks with DXE to offer something that was a kit made by someone else but for $$$ with their logo on it -- there's a handful of these in their catalog.

@c_dan4th @matthewconroy Story is that my uncle got kicked out of his college dorm for filling the hallway with a couple of inches of sand as part of a "beach party". While I doubt it was as well executed as the family story goes, I am picturing something similar here.

@relistan Last summer I had built a very crude 50MHz crystal oscillator following a circuit out of Solid Stare Design for the Radio Amateur. Very much just copying a design, but a good experience trying my hand at Manhattan-like construction. I was intending to make it part of a beacon, but I got busy with other life goings-on before i did any more with it.

@RunRichRun@mastodon.social @msbellows@c.im Oh yes, I loved that room of the Franklin Institute. It just seems so quaint to be playing with static electricity by rubbing things together, compared to the big science particle accelerator experiments that came later. I never thought of Van De Graaf generators as a "serious" part of modern science, just a frequent toy used in classroom demonstrations. Clearly this Westinghouse Atom Smasher was the "missing link". 🤣

@msbellows@c.im @RunRichRun@mastodon.social I kind of thought the Van de Graff generators in the background of old science fiction movies was a bit overblown and almost a parody, but uh, apparently had some a basis in reality?

@a2_4am On a related request, can I send you a copy of my father-in-law's self-published educational software for the Apple II? I believe he sold it through ads in educational journals but I don't know if he had much success. I've since inherited his Apple IIc, a small pile of disks and some papers that go with it. I wasn't planning to figure out how to preserve it, but thought I'd offer them to someone who might be interested in it.

@TarkabarkaHolgy "Decision Making under Deep Uncertainty" has been a common research area in my field (hydrology, water resources engineering) in the last decade. (Personally, I stick with regular uncertainty.)

@mttaggart Thanks for this post. I've been an extreme skeptic of LLMs but seeing increasingly promising results for agentic coding. I'm not sure I'm on board with using it as regular practice but increasingly seeing the need to experiment with it to better understand how it'll impact my job, and provide better informed opinions on it.

@loriemerson@post.lurk.org Hmmm, I'm guessing I'd have to resign from the board at my shul, but I suppose having four years of Catholic high school and four years of Catholic undergrad would help make the case I'm not new to the scene.
