Helmholtz Institute One Health
The Helmholtz-Institute for One Health is a new institute of the HZI. The institute is closely interlinked with its local founding partners: the University of Greifswald, the University Medical Center Greifswald and the FLI. HIOH addresses the threat posed by the emergence of novel pathogens as well as the evolution of known pathogens, including AMR with a focus on the interplay of human and animal health and environmental and climatic factors.

Tiermedizin, Mikrobiologie, Epidemiologie

🌍 World Zoonoses Day
~60% of human infectious diseases and ~75% of emerging ones originate in animals.
🦠 Mpox and Ebola are key examples of zoonotic diseases with spillover potential.
🌿 Environmental change and human–wildlife contact increase outbreak risks.
🤝 Conflict and weak health systems can amplify spread and hinder response.
In places like the DRC, preventing outbreaks requires more than medicine:
environmental protection, biodiversity and peace are key to global health security.
🚀 One Health Cohort 2026 successfully completed
Following an intensive period of preparation and fieldwork, we have now completed the first phase of the One Health cohort study in Taï National Park in Côte d’Ivoire. A big thank you to everyone who supported us during this phase of the study! 👏 🙏
👉Read more about the full process of the Cohort in our Newsroom: https://www.helmholtz-hioh.de/en/newsroom/one-health-cohort/
🚀 It’s happening: data collection for our One Health cohort has begun in Taï National Park 🌍
A big step toward understanding the connections between human, animal & environmental health.

🎉 Milestone reached: Our cohort continues to grow – and already 500 participants have joined! ✨ Follow our journey since day one here: https://www.helmholtz-hioh.de/en/newsroom/one-health-cohort/
Update from the ONE HEALTH COHORT
🚀 Today marks an important milestone:
In Paulé-Oula (Taï), we launched our first study site:
🩺 Examination of human participants
🐾 Examination of domestic animals
🐭 Sampling of small mammals
🌿 Environmental sampling
This will enable us to generate comprehensive data across human, animal, and environmental health domains.
We look forward to sharing further insights from the field!

🎉 Congratulations to Ariane Düx on successfully defending her dissertation! 🎓
A wonderful conclusion to years of intensive research—Thank you for your inspiring work and valuable contribution to research 🌟 We wish you all the best and continued success! #PhD #OneHealth #Research #Science #AcademicLife

How can forests help prevent future disease outbreaks? 🌳🦇 🦠
That’s what the INFORBIO project is exploring in Central Africa.
Using a One Health approach, we are building an early warning system for zoonotic pathogens🌿

📢 New update from Côte d’Ivoire: Our One Health cohort is now fully underway.
Across nine villages, we combine environmental sampling, wildlife monitoring, and health assessments of humans and livestock to study pathogen emergence at the human–animal–environment interface.

Cohort Update 🩺🐾🌿One Health Côte d’Ivoire
Our team is now on the ground in Taï and field activities have begun: participant recruitment and small mammal sampling are underway, the field lab is operational. A stakeholder workshop reinforced local engagement in zoonotic disease prevention — already covered by the Ivorian press.
Pandemic prevention needs long-term vision.
This Deutsche Welle video highlights how HIOH’s One Health Exploratory in Côte d’Ivoire enables continuous monitoring across humans, animals and the environment — and could one day serve as a model for a global network to detect emerging risks and prevent future pandemics.

🇨🇫 From May 25–27, 2026, HIOH participated in the Bangui Scientific Days in the Central African Republic. Together with WWF CAR, HIOH showcased its One Health work in Dzanga-Sangha, connected with researchers and students, explored collaborations, and highlighted local conservation efforts.
