It was rainy off and on all day. We need the rain.
-
I had a nice, if chilly, outdoor lunch with friends yesterday.

My husband is alive. He had a dangerously low hypoglycemic event last evening (low 20's when the paramedics tested his blood sugar). He was taken to the hospital emergency room, but I was able to bring him home around 2:30 AM, and he's been doing OK today.

My dwarf lily is blooming, vividly.
-
A local person asked me to test-bake a couple of recipes for a cookbook she is writing. I made the ginger cookies today, and they are delicious. (Oatmeal cake will be baked this weekend.)
-
Progress is being made on my goals of reducing fire hazard in my yard.
-
We had foundation plants (azalea, nandina and rhododendron) cleared from the second side of our house this week. We'll get pea gravel put over the dirt later. (This is part of a long project to reduce fire danger to our house, given the warmer, drier summers we have these days.)
-
I finished reading Ann Patchett's new novel, Whistler, it is excellent.
-
Many of the lilies I transplanted in March are blooming or in bud.

I woke up a little after 5 am, hearing my husband letting the dogs out. He told me of Graham's death and talked about that til I was quite awake, but I was able to get back to sleep for another hour.

A while back, I made a cryptic note in my schedule calendar
(91) diamond
and was puzzled by it for for several days this week. This morning I recalled what it was about. It was a reminder that that on that date, it will be 91 days since I put 2 40-lb bags of dog food (Diamond Naturals brand) in the new dog food container, so I can track how long it takes the dogs to eat a bag of dog.
- My husband wanted chili today, and I made a big batch--lunch is taken care of for the next 3-5 days.
- This morning my husband and I completed a challenging maintenance task. We needed to change 5 filters and clean a device.
The instructions for this were written by someone who knows how to do the task so well they could do it with their eyes closed and at least one hand tied behind their back. Unfortunately, this writer of the instructions cannot conceive of others not having their level of expertise, they renamed one of the parts a fanciful name, using no descriptors (call it the small, blue whiskiflitter and I'll have a better chance of identifying it!) and they left out a few steps...
I took pictures as we disassembled the last parts, and that was very helpful. We hope it goes more smoothly next time, but are happy that we were able to get it done!

A friend gave us a cheesecake last week, with strawberry sauce. We ate half of it and froze the rest. I love cheesecake.
-
My husband is going through some old clothes, and is finding several things to donate. He tends not to realize how many of something he has, and overbuys--a post-stroke bit of brain damage.
-
(a bonus good thing!) I am working on fermenting my own kefir. My first batch was so-so, but I have found a few folks here who have written about their process, and have begun to incorporate some of their methods.
-
I had a really nice swim today with my friend Marilou.
-
I got an expensive prescription refilled today, and had 5 pills left over from the last refill. The pharmacy sometimes takes over a week for refills, so this might come in handy.
-
A neighbor put up a large Progress Pride flag this evening. I went out and thanked him for that, and we chatted a little. He recently moved into the household there, and I was glad to have an opportunity to talk with him for a few minutes.
-
I slept quite poorly last night, but was able to get a couple of cat-naps today, so had fair energy.
-
Yesterday I made a good size batch of a pasta salad, and some blackberry muffins, so food preparation today was minimal.
-
I usually sit outside after dark while my dogs are playing. Both last night and tonight, I became aware of a group of people singing, likely outside, to the east of my home. They may be practicing for a performance. I don't hear them clearly enough to understand words, the songs are not accompanied, and I don't recognize the tune(s) , but it is pleasant to hear, and nice to think of people engaging together.
-
I had lunch with a friend I see too rarely, and after lunch we went to her house and I taught her how to make kefir and gave her some of my kefir grains.
-
My husband was notified that he won a drawing he entered at a chocolate shop, and his prize is 2 8-ounce Dubai chocolate bars.
-
I tried a recipe for yeasted waffles over the weekend, they came out very crispy and good. The recipe makes enough for 6 waffles, so we had them for breakfast both Saturday and Sunday. We'll do that again, probably next month.
-
My husband has restored our internet after it was knocked out last night during a thunderstorm.
-
My dog Kali has developed a new approach to waking me when she wants to go out at night. Instead of barking loudly, she noses under my covers, locates my elbow and nudges til I wake up. (My other dog Tempi has the less successful approach of quietly walking over to my side, standing 6-8 inches away from me and wishing very hard.)
-
I get to go swimming this afternoon!
-
Our air quality has been in the "unhealthy" range this week, but the air purifier and my mask have been very helpful. I have a swim date tomorrow, and if it's still smoky, will spend the hour treading water with my mask on rather than actually swimming.
-
I had a 4-month check up with the surgeon who did some minor surgery in April. He says all is very good, and that I can have some testing/imaging done in a year, but nothing else is needed now.
-
I have read some very good books recently, one that I particularly wish my mother had also read, she would have loved it.
- I received an email asking about an item I had ordered. The item arrived broken (shipped from the midwest, made of thin particle board, not packaged super well.) I replied with a description of the damage, and explained that I had glued the broken areas and that it is now functional, but that they might consider better packing materials for long-distance shipping.
To my surprise, I received a new item last week, unbroken. It was kind of an expensive thing, so I was not expecting them to replace the one I'd already received, especially since I had let them know that I had fixed it.
I'm pretty happy, as I had been contemplating taking my chances on ordering a second one later this year.
This morning I went to a nearby chocolate shop and had them mail a box of nice chocs to the company, with my thank you.

Last August/September I began to notice some pretty flowering trees and shrubs, and found that they are crape myrtle. I've been looking at them more, and think I'll get one next year, once I decide where to plant it. I like to see colorful blossoms this late in the season.

My husband made a big pot of chili, it came out quite well, and will make good eating for the next few days.
