#Whamageddon really bothers me. Firstly, it's a million miles away from the worst Christmas song (Wonderful Christmas Time - McCartney, hang your head in shame), but also, it makes George Michael into a punchline, despite being a Grade A chap. In a show of absolute magnanimity, Michael donated his proceeds from it - in perpetuity - to the Band Aid foundation. It still receives that money: around £300,000 a year. And people actively avoid playing it for a meme.

Email from Royal Mail: "We delivered your parcel! How did we do?" Mate, you did the bare fucking minimum expected of you. Your entire job is to accept the parcel that someone wants to send me, transport that parcel to my house, then ensure that the parcel enters my house. That is literally your job. Reviews are for things that cost people money to experience. I will review a meal. I will review a new record, or a new movie. I will not review a fucking parcel delivery. Particularly not the default parcel delivery service in the UK.

So here's a thing...

We idly pondered booking a cruise on Queen Mary. 7 nights up to the Norwegian fjords to marvel at Slartibartfast's work. More than we are comfortable spending, really, but having done that voyage several times when I worked aboard, I know that T would enjoy it too. And it was their idea anyway.

So we look at the booking. You have to tick a box to say that you require an accessible room if you use a wheelchair - even if you're an ambulatory user.

The reason for this is down to SOLAS - Safety of Lives at Sea; International regulations that state that if a guest has mobility requirements, an evacuation chair must be made available to them. Even if the guest states they can walk up stairs in an emergency if necessary, they're not allowed to opt out.

The number of evacuation chairs is tied to the number of accessible rooms. So on a ship the size of QM2, that's 31 rooms. Out of 1316. So on any one voyage, a maximum of 62 wheel chair users are permitted to travel. (assuming two people to a room)

So far, so inaccessible. But so be it in a world where accessibility is an afterthought.

HOWEVER

The ONLY way to book one of these accessible rooms is by paying extra for the 'Cunard Fare', which gives the ability to choose which room you have.

So in essence, if you use a wheelchair - for whatever reason - your trip with Cunard* will cost you more than someone who doesn't use a chair. You literally have to pay more to travel with Cunard if you use a wheelchair.

This is, to be clear, discrimination.

For a seven night voyage this is an extra £300. Looking at the list of benefits, there is literally nothing else in the list we need, but because they've tied the accessible rooms to having to be able to choose your own room, they've put the cost of travel behind a £300 paywall.

There's no reason for this that I can see. If you tick the box to say you need an accessible room, then the system should automatically only be able to put you in such a room if one is available. You cannot meaningfully choose your room if there are only 6 available at your price point.

As I said: discrimination.

So we're not going to visit Norway after all.

#Accessibility #Disability
_
*I suspect it's the same across all of Carnival's lines, not just Cunard, but I haven't looked.

Up the Asda, where the gingerbread men are called 'gingerbread persons', and I, as a sensible God-fearing conservative am OUTRAGED! How am I to know whether I'm suckling on sweet, delicious, feminine gingerbread breasts or being FORCED to perform a disgusting, perverted fellatio on a big, fat, juicy, swinging gingerbread penis if those WOKE LIBTARDS at Asda refuse to gender their biscuits‽

I've complained about this before, but I like to complain, so...

One of the things I hate most about Amazon, is how effectively they've snuffed out high streets. All those little bits you need that before would have been a quick trip to a shop nearby are now something you have to buy online and wait a couple of days to have delivered. That's significantly less convenient, and significantly worse for the environment.

What before was a walk or a bike ride to a shop is now someone in a warehouse shipping a thing to a local delivery centre, then having someone bring it to your house.

That odd cable or adapter that you used to be able to pick up in Maplin or Tandy; only available online now. I remember talking about bootlaces on here before. There used to be places you could go to buy reasonable quality bootlaces. Not any more.

Hell, even shops that *should* stock things like that, don't. Currys should have a range of odd cables in stock, but it's more cost effective for them to hold them in a warehouse to post to you when you order it online.

At the risk of sounding over dramatic, it's all part of chipping away at our shared humanity. That experience of popping in to town to get a bit you need, and seeing other people, feeling like part of a community. All gone, because it wasn't cost-effective enough.

Astonishingly, I was able to recover the corrupted audio from tonight's episode of #ThePlaylist, so here it is!

Our theme this week:

Whistling

And boy oh BOY was it a time. Numerous server outages, router reboots, and software crashes, but somehow I managed to keep the recording going.

The music is excellent, but there's some annoying, slight hiss over my links that I'm far too frazzled to do anything about.

Anyway, please enjoy. This week's shaved a few hours off my life.

So yeah...

Turns out that it's possible to recover the audio using Audacity, which is useful to know. However, it has left a slight hiss over my links. Not the music (that I could hear, though mostly I was just happy to have the recording back in any form). It's possible that I could fiddle with the settings and lose the hiss entirely, but that's a project for another time. A quick dive into high passes and such didn't do anything useful.

I'm genuinely amazed at all the shit that went wrong tonight, and am not in the slightest bit keen to go through that again. It would seem that the gods of radio, Marconi and Reith, were not fans of whistling, so did everything in their power to thwart me.

So, please try to enjoy what's there, but I will fully understand if this one ends up being the least popular of all the shows.

At least the playlists are good though! Go and jam them instead!

I've been reminded of Grave of the Fireflies, and how, when I saw it I knew it was known to be a bit weepy, but had no idea just *how* bleak it is.

So I went in knowing that it was a Ghibli, and Ghibli make heartwarming, fantastical animations with (somewhat) happy endings for all involved.

And oh. Oh god.

Grave of the Fireflies is very, very not that.

The most beautiful film that you'll only ever want to see once.

@troberts@theblower.au To my eternal shame, I bought that when it first released because there was so much fanfare in the rock press around it, listened once, hated it, and swapped it for a Backyard Babies record. Don't get me wrong, I've no shame around still loving that BB record, but I've subsequently come to realise just how wrong I was about Around The Fur.

If you're a Spotify type, try again, now I've actually made the playlists public...

The Mended Drum

DJDarren (@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org)

As ever, we've collected all the songs played this week into streaming playlists, so you can add your favourites to your own libraries. And for this week only, this might actually be the less stressful way to enjoy the music... Apple Music - https://music.apple.com/gb/playlist/theplaylist-whistling/pl.u-GgA5YbbTxxYZqGr Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6cPSsIxu2aEtLHLEXcQnEd And #ThePlaylistExtras; all the other tunes that were suggested that we didn't have time to play: Apple Music
