I’m sorry but everytime I read of a solution for all the plastic and microplastic in our environment being eaten by a microbe, I can’t help but think of Crichton’s Andromeda strain, where most of the plastic being eaten was vitally useful.
A story that should be in the back of anyone’s mind of anyone expecting a biological solution.
The world is rife with examples of invasive species that were initially brought in to solve a problem, or simply looked attractive.

besides collecting ID directly to government enforcing abuse of citizens via surveillance, data leak and surveillance capitalism?
Not much. Although they should allow confirmation by a trusted in between where individual privacy is valued such as the device platform. Or parental controls.
It used to be a non issue, as one had to be of legal age to have a credit card. And banks at least at one point valued privacy.

Maybe ‘stack’em high!’ warehousing isn’t the best idea in areas prone to earthquakes.

@gruber@mastodon.social I don’t disagree at all.
But I think the new trend towards web apps, particularly for ai services that want dish out ‘build this app for me’ requests to people who don’t know programming at all, because it allows easy sharing of apparent ‘work’ and the web provides its own degree of sandboxing and APIs that these same ‘customers’ would never be able to set up for a platform native app.
Yes, it’s a lazy as hell one size fits all approach. AI may need all the customers they can get.

The flip side of these protests against failing to include alt txt with an image is that much of it can be and is disingenuous. From those that are using paired captions and image purely for AI training.

Another thing is that clover in general is usually a ground cover that can dominate an area anyway; if it were not being regularly plowed under for fertilizer for food crops, it would probably be there anyway if merely left alone.

Not knowing which would get traction when Twitter went south, I started accounts on mastodon, threads and Blue Sky.
Threads was almost immediately a no go.
BlueSky was always bugging me to see my photos, etc. people I knew were on BlueSky, and were posting regularly I never saw in my timeline.
Now if i hit a BlueSky link at all it asks me to log in. And I never do.

I liked Sherlock AND Watson both as search engine aggregators. It was extremely useful when no one dominated search yet, and they both did work differently despite one becoming famously ‘Sherlocked’.
Combined with the fat hose pipe of a new to me high bandwidth cable connection they both seemed miraculous. I used both as long as they both existed. I think OS X really killed them, or one of them.

I honestly think there are entire speculation markets built upon what people are ASKING on eBay. Not based on the price something is selling. Based on what people are asking. And hustlebros with a get rich quick mentality think that represents real demand and market value.
A lot of bubbles need to burst. Hard. But the worse things get, the more this crazy wish fulfillment speculation grows.

Just for those who thought Don Martin suddenly ‘came out of nowhere’, before Mad, Don Martin had worked illustrating ‘studio cards’ humorous all occasion greeting cards which were a ubiquitous craze in the late 50s, especially among the cocktail set. VIP Partch, who had been a visual gag writer in animation and had a tendency to give his characters extra fingers and toes was also in this illustration field of work.

Something I do while installing all apps, even those dependent on location to work, is to tap the permissions dialog on installation to allow location services only when using app.
I almost never have wifi on unless intentionally, but cell connection can sometimes merge with map info, to interesting results depending how you use your phone there. Even mid air flight.
I got some weird ‘use sattelite connection? on watch or phone, and an offer (or thought I’d triggered) SOS mode

I interpret that as saying ‘Want to sell your business to MicroSoft, or someone like them because wouldn’t that be prestigious to be owned by such a large deep pocketed company, even though SEC may not allow us to say this to just anybody. Do you feel ‘aligned with Microsoft’?
Rather than saying, ‘Hey you own Microsoft. Want to sell it?’ Or even saying ‘Want to sell your Microsoft stock?’

This reminds me of something that should be in real estate code, but isn’t- there should be no shrubbery fencing or building to the curb within two car lengths of a corner, entrance, exit or intersection that can block the view of oncoming traffic.
It’s bad enough having to see through neighboring vehicles twice as tall or long than the roads were designed for.

4 hrs is still a bit long, but an improvement. I recall seeing some scenes in previews that seemed like the book.
What was telling to me while reading the editing recap was remembering when I left the theatre, or at least when I became deathly ill from motion sickness. It was not the high frame rate version but it was a 3d print. The goblin war was a road too far. Exactly the camera moves you should avoid in 3d.
Such a nice tight linear tale as a book.

I believe you are right it was called WebOS, tho that makes me think more of server side needs than a device OS.
.
It had the sliding card metaphor to switch apps.
PalmOS was the clunkier older palm phone and PDA OS where the web or email looked like a blackberry, bad fonts. Forgot Linux based Palm Pre 2009 had hidden sliding keyboard.
Great design. It was a close contender. Without the market clout &telco connections that Android, MS held.

I understood why Adobe started on this road. They couldn’t add features compelling enough to sell a paid upgrade, which traditionally had been a tad above $ 500 per flagship. The old versions worked more than well enough.
Students actually liked it. They only paid for subscriptions while taking classes (they weren’t using it except for class work? Then why learn it?)
I’m glad to finally see a sea change, a seeming majority of users, tired of the abuse.

Makes me wonder about buffer size.
Playing ADVENTURE (Collosal Cave) days on a video terminal on a DEC PCP whatever (7? 11?), it was a simple and common habit to navigate through the game preloading the moves (waiting for it to load) up until XYZZY or PLOUGH or PLOVER, to receive a text dump of the narrative so far, and when it had loaded, placing us facing, or past, a dwarf with an ax, or in a maze of twisty passages all alike (different) before the system could even respond.

It’s difficult to remember true patriotism in an era of jingoism and falsehood.
