Thirty Bob Ross paintings will be auctioned over the next few months, with proceeds going to small and rural public stations across the United States that have had their funding cut off. Congress has eliminated $1.1 billion allocated to public broadcasting, leading to many stations making programming cuts and laying off staff. Most of the paintings of mountain vistas and lake scenes were created on air, in under 30 minutes. Ross "dedicated his life to making art accessible to everyone,” said Joan Kowalski, president of Bob Ross Inc. “This auction ensures his legacy continues to support the very medium that brought his joy and creativity into American homes for decades.” Here's more from @AssociatedPress@flipboard.com.

Photographer Christopher Anderson's shots of President Trump's inner circle have created almost as much chatter as the Vanity Fair Susie Wiles interview they accompanied. Anderson's signature closeup style showed every pore, line, and possible lip-filler injection site. Here's what he told @Independent@flipboard.com. “When we were finished, [Stephen Miller] came up to me and he said, ‘You know you have a lot of power in the discretion you use to be kind to someone in your photographs,’” Anderson recalled. “And I look at him and I said, ‘You know, you do too.’”

“I don’t know how much he related to that,” Anderson added.

An AI-generated mural on the side of a building Kingston upon Thames in the U.K. has been removed after locals described it as "horrible, like a scene from hell." It was supposed to depict a festive ice-skating scene, inspired by the work of sixteenth-century Flemish painter Pieter Brueghel the Elder. But by accident or design (one theory is that it was the work of Young British Artist Mat Collishaw) it instead showed contorted human faces, heavily disfigured dogs, a Christmas market engulfed in flames, and a hideous snowman. After numerous complaints, with some suggesting that it was actually a comment on the refugee crisis, it was taken down on Nov. 20. Here's more from ArtNet.

After Eastman Kodak went bankrupt in 2012, it continued to make Kodak film, but the rights to distribute it went to a separate company, Kodak Alaris. Now, the 133-year-old company has launched Kodacolor 100 and Kodacolor 200, its first new still film stocks in many years, and has said that it will be selling Kodak Gold and Ultramax directly. "[This] suggests that the company has figured out how to wrest some control of its distribution away from Kodak Alaris," @404mediaco@mastodon.social's @jasonkoebler@mastodon.social writes. "Christina's World," the famous painting by American artist Andrew Wyeth, went out of MOMA's gallery rotation in 2024, and Adam Neese, the museum's Senior Collections Photographer for Conservation, took the opportunity to take a closer look at it. For the MoMA blog, he writes about the imaging techniques he used to examine the painting, and what they revealed. "We now have a set of detailed visual images, with each stitched image comprising over a billion pixels. These images preserve not just the appearance of the painting, but its material history," he writes.

What happens when copyright runs out? Anyone can commodify the work of a creator. @Dwell@flipboard.com looks at efforts to protect the legacies of Henri Matisse and Frida Kahlo, and why it's so hard to copyright furniture. "To a large extent, a chair is a chair," explains lawyer David M. Adler.

"In a time when freedom of expression is under threat, just about any kind of art feels political in its own way," write the team at @ArtNews@flipboard.com in the intro to their list of the defining artworks of the year. Here's what they selected, including "Un coro de yicas" (A chorus of yicas), which celebrates the work of Indigenous women, Heji Shin's cover for Lorde's "Virgin" album, and Kara Walker's "Unmanned Drone, about which Maximilíano Durón says: "She shows how the building blocks of racist historical narratives can appear too large to dismantle but, in fact, can be slowly unraveled to expose the lies beneath."
