The most useful thing I can tell you about double vanities: budget about 36 inches per sink. Below that two people collide every morning, and no finish upgrade fixes a layout problem.

Spouse and I have finally conceded that perhaps our tattered hand-me down furniture should be replaced soon with pieces that actually fit the rooms better.
Facebook marketplace, like Craigslist before it, is a carnival of corrigenda in which sellers neglect to include crucial information like dimensions, materials, etc. Or just outright mislabel things (usually out of ignorance).
Sir, that is not a “coffee table with hidden storage,” it’s a PIANO BENCH.

For most of my professional life, I’ve put my art in black frames. but to celebrate a recent milestone birthday, I’m framing all future work with white frames. It’s gonna take some getting used to, but I think I’m going to like the way the white brings out the color of my paintings..I’m getting rid of the gloomy grey wall next :) open to any suggestions. Interior design is not my talent.

Kitchen update: I still haven’t figured out the stain color. The fridge was delivered almost a month ago. We’ve been using it mostly “naked” while I continue to figure out the stain. Spouse eventually put a makeshift panel/handle on one door, and the freezer drawer. The handle is a stair handrail lol. It’s very chunky and reminds me of The Flintstones.

I swear it’s gonna look real nice when it’s done (if we don’t butcher it in some way). This makeshift panel is a pre-finished maple which is actually going on the inside of our cabinets.
But the final panels will be white oak with brushed brass handles, like the rest of our cabinetry will be.

Spouse pointed out that even though both the door and drawer panels were cut from the same piece, the color looks different because of the way the grain is oriented: vertical on the door, and horizontal on the drawer.
It makes me wonder if that’s some of the frustrating color difference I’ve noticed in other kitchen cabinet photos of white oak.

In other news, I’ve been advised to go ahead and choose the final countertop material I ultimately want, because removing a temporary counter from new cabinets could damage them. Does anyone have any experience with this? It really puts a kink in my plans (even though I’d love to have my dream countertop now) b/c we can’t afford to do the whole kitchen all at once, so trying to match stone slabs later would probably be next to impossible.

The most expensive design mistake you can make in a kitchen remodel isn't picking the wrong hardware. It's a misunderstanding that your cabinetry color dictates the entire spatial flow of your home.
When advising clients on the dark vs. light kitchen debate, the conversation usually starts with trends. But it should always start with architecture.
Light cabinetry is the ultimate spatial expander. It maximizes natural light reflectance and provides a highly adaptable structural baseline. It’s safe, but without rigorous tactile integration—think raw timber, heavy linens, and handmade ceramics—it risks feeling sterile.
Then there is the spatial paradox of the dark kitchen.
We are often told to avoid deep tones in compact footprints. Yet, saturated cabinetry—when balanced with reflective stone worktops and intentional ambient lighting—can actually ground a small space. It creates intentional intimacy rather than restrictive enclosure. It gives the room immediate architectural weight. 🤍
The deciding factor shouldn't be what looks good on a screen. It should be how the finish interacts with your home's existing light pathways, and crucially, your tolerance for daily maintenance. Lighter surfaces show smudges; darker surfaces aggressively highlight dust and scratches.
Which architectural approach aligns with your living space? Read our complete breakdown on spatial proportion and kitchen palettes.
