Socialism is a system where higher incomes (meaning millionaires and billionaires) are taxed to provide safety nets to the lowet incomes, including guaranteed basic income, free health care, free education all the way to a PhD, etc.
In Comunism, things go a little further, where means of production are colectivized, basically making every productive enterprise a labour cooperative owned by the workers, but private property (homes, cars, personal bellongings, etc) still exist.
What happened in the USSR was a bastardized system where the state became a monopoly, directly owning all the productive chain and real estate. This is what we now adays call "state capitalism"
