I've been sick most of this year so focused on just doing behind the scenes server stuff to try to keep our server safe from the endless deluges of spambots and AI agents we've had lately.

I keep wanting to write a thread on a topic I'm researching (when I can't leave bed, I just read and take notes sometimes), but social media is exhausting to look at right now.

As a trans, queer, disabled person, the news of late is horrifying.

So feel free to share funny stories and/or kitty or bird pics!

I've been using the block the IP tool since this new spam attacks seem to come from one IP until that one is blocked then they switch it up I guess?

Do others have tips on how to block this spam attack?

We have always had our server so everyone must fill out an application and accept our server rules to join, but this is clogging up the apps so it's taking longer to find real people who are trying to sign up. Ugh.

I know even writing that means those who respond either listen in support or prove my point. I want people to boycott JK Rowling, which means stop watching and buying anything she creates (which means Potterverse especially). As she uses these funds to harm trans people. We have proof with her own words no less that she uses the money that way. And yet, Potter defenders just derail and attack instead of listening. I'm just TIRED of it. Diagnosing this may or may not help idk.

Lately, discourse on trans, race, disability, immigrant, and queer issues is exhausting. We lay out facts of what is happening and make calls for action, but I don't see solidarity actions or much fighting back.

I feel I'm yelling into the void, but not even the void is listening.

I watch as rights are stripped away from marginalized communities in USA, and barely anyone in USA speaks of it. Instead, we're caught up in a war of not-reality versus actual reality. It's disturbing to witness.

* Make it a day to mourn those we lost to USA's past, current, and ongoing genocides.
* Ignore it and make it the day of napping
* Make it a piss off a fascist or punch a fascist day
* Make it a day to craft items to help others
* Make a vow to not shoot off fireworks that terrorize animals and can be triggering to those with PTSD and hearing sensitivity
* Make it a day of scaring away ICE

Anyway, be creative. Don't celebrate USA.

DARVO style of gaslighting is way too common in society (USA).
Deny
Accuse
Reverse
Victim
Offender

The person denies that their actions caused you harm.

They then accuse you of harming them by making the claim OR claim that the behavior they did was actually you doing it (often despite you having visible proof that they did it.)

They then declare themself the victim of your behavior and thus they do not need to be held accountable, only you do.

It's insidious. And it's nasty gaslighting.

One can't be sustainable with AI; with the way it exists currently, it does tremendous damage to the environment and eats up way too much energy and water. Though I know you know that. I'm so frustrated as tech could be utilized in sustainable ways to assist in our revolution from fascists and tech giants... ... but a lot of people seem to have swallowed the whole genAI pill and fell into line with fascists far too happily. It's disturbing.

Making these accusations just because a character is Israeli is... bad faith reading at best. Depiction isn't endorsement. Hopefully folks will read her works to see this for themselves. Babel in particular is literally a revolution starting at a university.

@emilymbender @404mediaco I've been asked by my doctors, and I refuse every time. I do so because as a chronically ill disabled person, doctors fuck up my care enough without genAI. I don't want that happening more and putting me into danger, especially with how complacent people get with this whole letting "genAI think" for them. It honestly freaks me out to know a faulty software is being used in the medical field. The ethics of it is dubious at best.

I think Babel is very heavy handed in its story-telling, which made sense world-building-wise in that its an institution, but Yellowface and Poppy Wars are more approachable I think.

It makes no sense to use AI to make AI less slop, just as it makes no sense to use AI to detect AI use. sometimes it feels like people give more rights to AI than to marginalized folks... I hate this. As a disabled writer who writes either by hand or types my human ideas with my fingers, I'll keep on writing my old fashioned way, but I'm bitter over how hard it is to share and be noticed now.

I use Bookadon more than Booktube tbh. I also use Storygraph and often peruse the books people use for their challenges. Speaking of book recs, I made a thread for folks to recommend alternates to Harry Potter (I boycott it), but have yet to vet authors on it. I got so many recs here! Was overwhelming.

I finally caught up with all the people who joined since January who either posted or filled out their profile and profile pic. I didn't mention the ones who joined that show no activity as I'm not sure if those people realize their application was accepted or not. @CorneliusHecker Honestly, yes, I think that diagnoses some of it. I also feel like the onset of generativeAI was done deliberately to poison our ability to do any research (as there's so much lying slop now) and convince us to stop thinking for ourselves (by relying on a not-always-accurate machine instead). So I think that plays into it too. So we're caught between denial, lying people and machines creating false realities, and fascists that gleefully exploit this to harm and destroy us.

@cwebber What always gets me about the whataboutism is that it's steeped in rancid individualism, which is capitalist ideology. And capitalist ideology won't save us or our planet. If those doing the whataboutism actually cared about our concerns, they'd be asking about ways to collectively organize to stop the harm of data centers. An individual is easily stopped, but an organized and radically aware group is much harder to stop.

@kbsez By focusing on the defense of the Potter universe it derails all threads about Rowling's HARM, and thus trans people can't even talk about the harm she's doing because defenders of Potter universe are stuck in a loop of defending their fixation rather than listening to what others are trying to say. I point this out because I'm exhausted by conversations that try to defend the Potter universe. We can't stop Rowling's initiatives if this comes up every single time.

@kbsez My hope is that people don't fixate on just the Potter universe but explore the works of other people, especially authors like myself. We write worlds that break down bigotry to build up a more just world. The defense of the Potter universe to trans folks like myself feels very hurtful at this point. Because no matter how I respond, I am faced with people unwilling to expand horizons or acknowledge the biases baked into the text. Their defenses are brick walls to me.

@WeirdWriter@caneandable.social oh nooooo, I hope that's not the case! I'll delete mine too and stop rec-ing her. Unrelated, I rarely watch contrapoints tbh, not since the Buck Angels controversy. (He claimed nonbinary folks like me are co-opting the trans community and take away his rights. He's a trans guy who medical transitioned)). A few videos spoke more to the right than to someone like me, and the language used was a bit painful. So i looked for less triggering podcasts that do good research.

@kbsez I personally found some fans are eager to tell me they'll support the franchise no matter what, and when I point out where her money goes and it's impact on my life, I end up dehumanized and sometimes mocked. Told it's impossible to boycott so why bother. So at this point, I can see why some people are angry at folks who claim to still be fans. That doesn't mean it's ok to be cruel, but I want to be clear that fans need to be kinder too. Try to meet in the middle with us.
