26 years ago, July 25, 2000: Air France Flight 4590 Concorde crash in Paris killed all 100 passengers & 9 crew aboard. The chain of events was started with foreign object debris FOD that fell from a Continental DC-10. A metal strip cut a tire which exploded, ruptured a fuel tank and started a fire that brought down the plane. Kevlar shields under the fuel tanks briefly returned Concordes to flight from Nov 2001 - Oct 2003. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_France_Flight_4590 #TDIH #history #aviation #travel #avgeek

63 years ago, July 9, 1962: Starfish Prime was the first nuclear explosion in #space, at 250mi/400km altitude. A warhead was launched on a Thor rocket from Johnston Atoll in the Pacific Ocean. Power was knocked out by the electromagnetic pulse in Hawaii, 900mi/1450km away. 3 communications satellites were disabled by the effects of the blast. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starfish_Prime #military #history #TDIH

64 years ago, July 9, 1962: "Starfish Prime" nuclear test was the first successful nuclear explosion in #space. (Second attempt of failed "Starfish" test.) The flash was visible southwest of Hawaii. Aurora formed over Hawaii and New Zealand. But it had unintended consequences. An electromagnetic pulse knocked out power in Hawaii, ~600mi/1000km away. Radiation caused the early demise of all satellites in orbit at the time. https://spaceweatherarchive.com/2022/07/08/starfish-prime-the-first-accidental-geomagnetic-storm/ #StarfishPrime #military #nuclear #history #TDIH
