64 years ago, July 9, 1962: "Starfish Prime" nuclear test was the first successful nuclear explosion in #space. (Second attempt of failed "Starfish" test.) The flash was visible southwest of Hawaii. Aurora formed over Hawaii and New Zealand. But it had unintended consequences. An electromagnetic pulse knocked out power in Hawaii, ~600mi/1000km away.
