I never remember if rowspan means "spanning over multiple rows" or "spanning over multiple cells in one row". Same for colspan.
I always test and wait for the results or copy-paste from a working spreadsheet.
span="5 rows" would make a lot more sense to me than rowspan="5".
Not that I can really tell rows and columns apart in the first place.
