Hyderabad police, as part of a 13‑state “Operation Octopus,” arrested 66 individuals for supplying ghost SIM cards that were used in 76 cyber‑fraud cases amounting to about ₹101 crore. The crackdown uncovered 1,164 illegally issued SIMs, with 544 seized—including 432 ready for distribution to criminals—and revealed that many perpetrators had SIMs registered in their own names, operated temporary kiosks or acted as middlemen. Authorities said the fraudsters misused eKYC to activate extra SIMs without customers’ consent, diverted them to cybercriminals, and sometimes lured people to surrender SIMs for cash. Police have warned telecom providers to tighten verification processes and blacklist rogue agents.
