If you rewrote this is a 5 page short story, Readers Digest would've rejected it as "pointless and silly."

Wow, that wasn't just bad, it was egregious. It gave the finger to every precept of good cinema. The writing and direction was as bad as Manos, but with better production values (a low bar to step over)

I know why the civilization collapsed. An entire civilization enthralled with steampunk cannot survive.

"It is the symbol of time common to all races."
"A pocket watch?"
"What? What the fuck is that? Of course not!"

This could've been a short story.
This should've been a short story.
20 minutes of movie, tops. 30 pages of story, tops.

"We should be able to reach the plateau by 3 in the afternoon!"
A perfectly usable measure, on Mars. When, as you already said yourself in narration, YOUR WATCHES DON'T WORK.

"Our watches have refused to run since landing on this planet."
Honey, I'm not running on that fucking planet either.

Well, there's probably plenty of oxygen, if the fire can burn like that. Unless it's a fluorine environment, but then their suits would be on fire and shit.

Captain Longshanks there is holding the hand of the femme officer, because like all mentally deficient people (i.e. women), she can't be trusted to walk alone in a dangerous environment.

"A volcanic cavern! I should've known we'd find this!"
Yes. You should've known you'd find vulcanism on mars. The planet with no vulcanism. The planet with no dynamo. The dead planet.

This long cave journey is about as moving and relevant to the film as the 20 minutes of driving in the opening of Manos.
