RE: https://kolektiva.social/@personalescrito/117395420360960415 #Brazil: "The outcome of the October 4 election strengthens authoritarianism and Bolsonarism within the National Congress. This poses a clear threat to democracy in our country. False information bubbles and the lawless environment of social media have fostered a sentiment of rejection rather than one of nation-building and shaping the future. It is legitimate to desire change; steering that change toward the abyss and authoritarianism is very dangerous. We still have the opportunity, in the second round of the presidential election, to prevent the coup plotters from regaining control of the executive branch—now with even fewer safeguards than in the previous term. We cannot normalize the coup d’état or the violence." #Brazilelections2026 #farright #indigenous #environment #fascism #violence #democracy

Awful! "The election outcome leaves the Amazon Rainforest and its peoples in peril: Bolsonarism gained ground and will soon govern seven out of nine states states in the biome where deforestation increased by 59% during the previous four years it held the presidency. Currently, five of the region’s state administrations – Acre, Rondônia, Roraima, Mato Grosso, and Tocantins – are aligned with the far right, led by former president Jair Bolsonaro, who was convicted of attempting a coup. As a result of the October 4 vote, it maintains control of these states and adds two more: Pará and Amapá. The far right, which is working to tear down legal barriers to predatory exploration in the Forest, will dominate the Amazon." https://sumauma.com/en/bolsonarismo-comandara-pelo-menos-sete-dos-nove-estados-da-amazonia/ #Brazil #Amazon #rainforest #farright #bolsonarism #elections #brazilelections2026 #environment

TL;DR:

  1. Flávio Bolsonaro: 47.03% (56.1 million votes)
  2. Lula: 45.16% (53.9 million votes)

The result was much better for the far right than I expected. It’s now very difficult to see Bolsonaro losing the second round.

My feeling that we were heading for a repeat of 2018 was right. At least this time, it won’t come as a surprise.

Prepare for an Americas increasingly dominated by the right and far right.

Europe may soon find itself as one of the last major strongholds of liberal democracy, until the far right takes power in France and/or Germany, which increasingly seems to be the direction we’re heading.

"...A group of 31 U.S. Democratic lawmakers, led by Congressmembers Delia Ramirez, Pramila Jayapal, Jesús “Chuy” García, along with Senator Bernie Sanders, sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio accusing the #Trump administration of interfering in Brazil’s elections, the letter saying, “Over the course of President Trump’s second term, we have seen U.S. officials engage in a sustained, multifaceted campaign of interference and destabilization in #Brazil. #Brazil The science behind the threat begins with chemistry. Steel bars embedded in concrete are protected by a passive oxide film sustained by the high alkalinity of the pore solution. Carbon dioxide from the atmosphere diffuses into the concrete & reacts with the cement matrix, a process called carbonation that lowers the pH & dissolves that protective layer https://bioengineer.org/climate-change-could-silently-corrode-brazils-concrete-buildings-study-warns/ #ClimateChange #UpheavalClimate #ClimateInstability #ClimateReversal #pollution #ecology #environment #climate

"The new #documentary "Reading the World" profiles #PauloFreire, the acclaimed Brazilian educator whose revolutionary approach to teaching connected literacy to critical thinking and democratic participation. It draws on rare archival footage of 1960s #Brazil and weaves together the memories of farmers, students and educators who took part in Freire's culture circles, his method of teaching adults to read in as little as 40 hours by drawing on their own lives, communities and experiences. At the time, Brazil's illiterate population was barred from voting, so education also opened the door to political participation. The experiment was abruptly halted in 1964 when Brazil's military overthrew President João Goulart in a U.S.-backed coup that led to Freire's imprisonment and exile." https://youtu.be/Clc1o-34UIo?is=9Z6JX59ks5k-i1On

[Commentary] Community-based land management in Brazil delivers proven conservation results, yet nearly half of these households face economic hardship. Direct income-transfer programs like the Tropical Forests Forever Facility could safeguard both forest guardians and vital ecosystems.
