Ruth_Mottram - In Brussels and at a loose end tomorrow (Friday 11th September) evening?
Come and join us and our Ukrainian colleagues from National Antarctic Scientific Center of #Ukraine to talk Penguins, Floats and Balloons and learn more about our OCEAN ICE work on the #Antarctic peninsula
5pm to 6.30pm at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Brussels. There will also be refreshments on offer and activities for children so bring the whole family.

Yesterday I showed how global sea ice cover has taken a rapid tumble, so here's a closer look at that change in #Antarctic sea ice. It's currently the 2nd lowest extent on record for the date.
See more at https://zacklabe.com/antarctic-sea-ice-extentconcentration/ Data from the NSIDC.
Last month was the 5th lowest #Antarctic sea ice extent on record for the month of July.
This was 950,000 km² below the 1981-2010 July average. Data from https://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index

Antarctic tourism is growing fast, with over 120,000 visits in 2025-26 and up to 450,000 expected each summer within a decade. Our new study reveals how Antarctic tour guides grapple with the dilemma at the heart of their work — bringing more and more people to an ecologically vulnerable area, & helping cause some of the greatest CO₂ emissions of any form of tourism

The Case of the (France-Sized) Missing Antarctic Ice
“It's just a question of whether we're fast enough to stretch out that loss to several thousand years versus dumb enough to keep warming the planet and seeing it collapse very quickly in a century or two,” says a research scientist of what’s happening in Antarctica

As the climate warms, the mixed layer has been getting shallower. When that layer shrinks, these tiny organisms spend more time exposed to brighter sunlight — so they adjust their biology to cope
As phytoplankton received more light, they also became more productive — meaning they will increase in number. As a result, phytoplankton have been able to absorb more carbon from the atmosphere into the ocean due to their photosynthesis

The very persistent lack of #Antarctic sea ice in the Bellingshausen Sea region continued in June. In contrast, sea ice cover is much more widespread than average near the Ross Sea.

Zooming in a bit closer across the #Antarctic in May, the largest warm temperature anomalies were found over the Antarctic Peninsula (>5°C above the 1981-2010 average). This continues a trend from recent months for this particular region.

Record winter temperatures in Antarctic raise fears over speed of climate breakdown
Temperatures above 15C ‘very strange’ say scientists, as snow melts & rain falls on glaciers in usually frozen region
Scientists said the high of 15.4C broke the previous record set at the same station in 1998 by 2C. “This is absolutely crazy,” Raúl Cordero, an Ecuadorian climate professor. “It is also about 20C above normal for this time of the year. That is a huge anomaly”

#Christchurch in New Zealand is important for the exploration of #Antarctica . The International Antarctic Centre is a base facility for Antarctica exploration and it has a very good museum. #NewZealand https://backpackandsnorkel.com/Christchurch/#antarctic
