i'm trying to figure out which linux distros i would consider for a new server setup, and i have some requirements:

- release model (LTS specifically is not a concern)
- ZFS kernel module in the repos (building locally or not doesn't matter to me)
- no systemd
- as minimal as possible

and the choices i have seem to be... essentially just Alpine Linux?

Debian has systemd and feels kinda bloated, the same goes for all Red Hat distros, Gentoo is rolling release, i prefer to avoid Arch entirely. what's left, besides super niche distros and Alpine?

i think i'm "stuck" with Alpine, although that's not necessarily a bad thing, and usually i would use it without second thought, but the server i would be setting up would host all of my stuff and switching to a new distro later on is out of the question, so it should be future proof. alpine has dealt with a few major things in a way i didn't like, and the current discussion on a llm policy is worrying me a little, so i'm slightly reluctant to choose it now.

@whynothugo I won't pretend I know much about how Wero works, but I am aware that is based on european bank transfer stuff. I wanted to write something about it, but I barely know anything about the underlying technology and infrastructure. I tried it once and was extremely underwhelmed. It's just another app that puts arbitrary restrictions on what operating system it is running on, uses a phone number for identification, and shows a QR code for payments. Wero isn't as revolutionary or independent as they themselves and people generally make it out to be, it's more like a 2026 UI on european bank transfers. What I do care about is making the distinction that the payment cards and services aren't US based anymore but rather based in the EU, which is what I meant previously. FWIW I've seen people talk about using it without a smartphone in the future, but I'm guessing that's just wishful thinking and not something Wero has communicated as planned. I'd rather an app wasn't necessary in the first place.

Hello! After almost 3 years in my current job I'm looking for a new job around Stuttgart (hybrid, or fully remote in Germany)!

I am Thomas, 27 years old and looking for a job in embedded Linux software engineering. Languages I use are mostly C and Rust, but I'm open to learn/use other languages.

I am interested in embedded Linux, Linux kernel driver development (C and Rust), low-level application development, and Linux BSP development (i.e. Yocto). I use and occasionally contribute to Alpine Linux in my free time and have experience maintaining a custom Debian-based distribution. I've been using Linux as my main operating system for around 10 years now.

You can contact me here or through any of the channels listed on my website: https://wiredspace.de/about/#contact
I will give out my CV after initial contact as I'm not comfortable posting it online.

Please boost this post if you can, I'd be very thankful for that.

Thank you!

@whynothugo I'm with you on this. It's great something like Wero is in the works to replace the dependency on US services in the payment area, but there's so much missed potential here: No phone number required, payments without Android/iOS. It essentially consists of sending money and approving transactions through your bank. Both could have been done with the same effectiveness if usernames were used instead of phone numbers, and banks allowed approving transactions through other means than mobile apps. The way it is now completely unnecessarily fully binds the service to a smartphone running Android or iOS. But I guess it is a slight improvement over Visa/MasterCard and PayPal as transactions go through european banks and fees aren't paid out to US companies.

downtime is over, everything is up again. i ended up taking the server outside to clean it and put the SAS HBA in and connected the SATA drives to it. for some reason the PCIe HBA was recognized perfectly fine, but the SATA drives connected to it were not recognized at all. No logs or anything to even start debugging the issue. reseating the card and cables, and switching the port the cables were plugged into didn't change anything, so i decided to rollback to the previous setup again. so meh, not happy :/

do you care about scheduled downtime of my infrastructure? tbf, the only public things on it are my website and a mirror of my git repositories.

after having a quick look i noticed: i bought the wrong cable 🤦‍♂️ need a forward breakout cable, not a reverse one. already ordered a new one. so i suppose there will be more downtime next week

there will be another problem, though: PCI passthrough of the card to my TrueNAS VM. i *did* try this even though the drives weren't showing up, but it ended up not working: the VM wouldn't boot past the qemu bootloader, and i have no clue why... well, future me problem i suppose

treating my VMs and LXCs as pets isn't really doable anymore, but I also don't want to treat them as cattle because all tools that do that just suck. Ansible is a pain so I had a look at saltstack but that doesn't even support Alpine.

I have to admit using OCI containers has crossed my mind now, just because the rest is so unbearably bad. Then again, so are OCI containers, I can't stand them.

So is the only currently viable solution for me to move everything to a single VM inside of Proxmox...? my head hurts
