I don’t know if this is gonna float anyone else’s boat, but it made my afternoon! The @stabi_berlin@openbiblio.social just uploaded its digitization of a specimen for Ramses, a serif typeface designed by Hermann Delitsch for Julius Klinkhardt around 1912. The specimen’s title page features a stylized ornament that depicts Pharaoh Ramesses II. I instantly recognized it! H. Berthold AG acquired Klinkhardt after WWI, and Joseph Tscherkassy – a Ukrainian-Jewish former typefounder who fled to Berlin during WWI – reused it on a page from his 1924 specimen of H. Berthold AG’s Hebrew and Yiddish typefaces. I instantly recognized it from that catalog. In some quarters, it is considered the most beautiful metal type specimen ever printed.

@nika@typo.social I was a total mess 14 years ago until my doctor identified my weird thyroid and I started taking hormones. Things got almost immediately better but there were still ups and downs until mine was eventually removed. I hope the hormones bring you good results!

@nicksherman @ksmallgallery Since it observed the market so closely, the dates for specimens usually seem eerily correct. Certainly more reliable than German libraries, although the German National Library dates are pretty good for the final decades of typefounding.

@nicksherman @ksmallgallery Aside from library catalogs, only Gebr. Klingspor has a published bibliography of type specimens (in Hans Halbey’s 1991 book on Karl Klingspor). It is not entirely complete, but it is pretty good. Halbey had a brief stint in Klingspor’s marketing department before becoming the director of the Klingspor Museum, and later, the director of the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz. We don’t have any sources like the brilliant book on Dutch Type Foundry specimens from @MathieuLommen.

@johnbutler@typo.social The “uncial” is the Stefan-George-Schrift, created for George’s poems, around 1905. Supposedly by replacing several letters from Berthold’s Akzidenz-Grotesk. The foundry may have done this for him but the records haven’t turned up. This book looks really nice!!
