I just had (an LLM) diagnose a hardware issue in a laptop I've been suffering with for two years, after trying to ask around and getting ignored even on their official Discord. I know all of the ethical issues, but I feel like I'm having a different experience than what everyone else is describing. As someone whose experience of the world is consistently being ignored when I reach out for help, what do I do? This actually worked.

@Ashedryden@xoxo.zone It'll be unsustainable too. The tier that requires ID will see a precipitous drop in access and traffic, by design. I would speculate that whoever's pushing these rules knows that the majority of people won't give up their IDs to these random services, either through apathy ("I don't have time for this") or because it's a bad idea. Only massive platforms like Youtube will get people to jump through those hoops for access. Painting everything the same shade of beige is the point.

I also fight being fatalistic about the short-sighted nature of throwing away our climate goals, among the other terrifying systemic problems we're now drowning in. COVID still isn't over, and as a society we're failing to have productive conversations about any of this anymore.

You could lose the whole thing very easily if you’re not familiar with how these tools work and mix up, swap or typo the syntax. I would recommend hiring an expert if you have an entire book on the line, if that’s an option.

Is it even possible? Where do we cross the rubicon between that and accepting the burden that mass production puts on the environment? Would it still be useful at that point? I can certainly accept that it may just be a fundamentally cursed technology. It's being forced on us, so I would point to regulatory failures for not reining it in sooner.

It was an intrinsically selfish action to rectify an issue I've had with a device I paid nearly $3000 for two years ago and have been fighting with since and celebrated finding a silver lining. If it makes you feel better, it turns out ASPM disables lanes and purposefully downgrades PCIe connections, so it was wrong anyways! Doesn't mean the thing isn't still broken, I'm just left with an expensive trash device and no answers again in a vacuum.

@webhat@infosec.exchange Happy to. If you mean as a Mastodon post, I probably need to finally find another server, as mastodon[.]social's post limits make it hard to paste in relevant logs. If you mean a blog post, the where's an issue. Medium and Substack are definitely out. Ghost, maybe? And yeah, the RNG nature of the beast means the next person might not be so lucky and given I've not seen this before, it's like saying "nvm fixed it" when the next person comes looking.

I'm coming from a place of frustration where I found a single useful application while knowing the ethical problems around energy, sourcing/plagarism, active scraping, etc. Who owns the ethical burden of running and using these systems? Whether we're actively using them or not, we're still getting spammed by Amazon Rufus interjecting and self-prompting while shopping, for instance.

Gonna make up something about exhaustion and overwhelm maybe, but it’s just so fucking lonely. I forget that separation from your partner/fp when you have bpd is straight up traumatic.
