tilde.town has zero evidence of being actually hacked however we cannot stay online given the disclosure of a recent kernel vulnerability for which there is no mitigation. we've disabled SSH and that's why you can't log in.

As soon as the kernel is healthy again we will let users return.

our little town lights display well reflects our blackout conditions. There's just three lights on right now -- three of us admins.

botany now has color support! town has deployed this recently merged lovely PR: https://github.com/jifunks/botany/pull/44

GitHub

add color to botany by joyalicegu · Pull Request #44 · jifunks/botany

Add ansi_render() to menu_screen.py to render ANSI-colored ASCII art. Fall back on non-colored art if no colored art exists. Only some escape codes for setting foreground color are supported. Unsup...

this outage will probably be a longer one -- a key person needed to fix stuff is asleep and i'm sure not gonna wake em up. it'll get sorted out tomorrow

WE ARE BACK

WELCOME BACK

HI AGAIN

someone was prob running vscode again :(

forensics forthcoming as well as some preventative measures for future outages. we all thought, for eg, we had disabled swap but apparently didn't oops

anyway some stuff will be degraded for a bit, hang tight

HELLO EUROPEANS
would you be interested in attending ONE HALF of TOWN CON THE THIRD: AN OCEAN CONNECTED

if so, please let us know on the pinned bbj thread:
- WHERE IN EUROPE ARE YOU
- WHERE COULD YOU REASONABLY ATTEND TOWN CON THE THIRD: AN OCEAN CONNECTED

it will be hosted roughly three months from now, so chip in before we lock in a venue. we'd like to make this as comfortable as possible for organizers and townies alike!

our current best option: somewhere in the low countries…

WE ARE STILL ENCOUNTERING SOME DIFFICULTIES

it's probably just everything booting up all at once making the server slow and unresponsive. please be patient as we let it simmer for a bit and figure out what's going on

regarding user signups: in the run up to this month's town con I fell way off the user signup queue. I left off in August and have about 150 to get through to bring us up to date. patience appreciated.

well! that was premature! we're wedged again. Current hypothesis is that some new user's stuff was poorly behaved and is choking us out. We've already had one DC trip and will do our best to avoid a second one but it might be necessary later today.
