Walking, reading, riding San Francisco and actively hoping towards a better world.
I know just enough to get in trouble in far too many fields cuz I'm usually reading. Flower fan.
Therapy is hard to get, sometimes I vent here, sorry if it bothers you, but the personal is political and I stay real. also speculative. determine which is which at your own risk.

Okay, I took a rest day and I'm eating breakfast and getting on the road earlier today. The plan is Burlington as my stop for the evening. I'm averaging about 10 mph in the heat & humidity with the acoustic bike, which would be 5 hours although I'm probably going to stop and jump in the lake at least once and probably multiple times. For context I think of 15 mph as average biking speed on my previous acoustic bikes at home, and 11-13 mph is gentle, controlled city riding in SF on our "green wave" bike routes that have timed lights like certain points on Valencia (& Fulton maybe?).

47 miles, 1900 calories burned since lunch, and I was the last one over the border before it closed for the night. It was mostly beautiful, sometimes stunning, sometimes merely picturesque. Now I'm going to pass out.

Listening to Inheritance by Harvey Whitehouse, an anthropology book on the origins of religion and he discusses grave goods as proof people have always believed in an afterlife, but I think it's equally plausible that people just didn't want to deal with the arguments about who gets to inherit what. Is belief in an afterlife more intrinsic than squabbling over who gets the shiny things?

Anyways this brewpub is so cute! I'm drinking a lilac sour at a picnic table with cool breezes and a view of the lake and I might end up buying a poster because their merch is exactly up my alley. I already bought a few stickers. Sometimes travel, particular adventure travel, and particularly attempts at budget adventure travel, means rolling with the punches. I've got Better World Club roadside assistance, so when this happens I've got someone to turn to, like I did road tripping with AAA back when I owned a car. https://www.kraemerandkin.com/

I know flats can happen anywhere but I am inclined to blame America for this one. I noticed my tire getting soft about a half mile past a construction site. I walked half an hour to a sporting goods store on a map(and picked up an open pocket knife that was on the side of the road that I might have otherwise biked over, so things could absolutely be worse) where they unfortunately don't sell bike tubes, so I'm waiting at the brewpub next door for a tow truck.

So I'm taking a Greyhound bus for this part of the journey and it's repeatedly had to pull over for some mysterious (to me, presumably not the driver) reason as well as idling for more than an hour at a gas station stinking up the cabin, and now it's stuck in stop & go traffic.
1) buses should have BRT lanes on all freeways
2) when a bus needs to pull over this frequently a company as big as Greyhound should have the rolling stock to send replacement buses
3) the US needs more and better trains
4) we need to start charging single owner vehicles/single occupancy vehicles a fair rate to help create market competition for public transit (I can see all the empty passenger seats from here)

Route so far, It has a circle on it, but I didn't do that, gps malfunction. Lunch break completed and I'm ready to move on. The grilled cheese here has American cheese in it, blah, but the beer is great and the little carrot salad slaw that came with it is something I will attempt to recreate at home, so good. Now to bike south :)

A URL shortener or unrecognized, unmonitored URL or QR code in the wild real world, and even more so on the Internet, are to be treated with caution.

@EllenInEdmonton@yeg.bike although someone who works here did offer me a ride (or a road bike tube that doesn't match the bike I have unfortunately) part of the way and if I was willing to take more risks/depend on the kindness of strangers more/go really far out of my way I might have been able to cobble together a multiple hour journey to the closest bike shop for much cheaper.

@EllenInEdmonton@yeg.bike yes I would generally choose that but there are no buses here(very sad for many reasons) and I haven't seen any taxis. Uber flat out says no rides available, and Lyft says limited availability and charges $95 for a vehicle that might fit a bike(twice the call out fee for the tow truck with the insurance).

Ooh I knew I'd be slower than the average cyclist, but I'm even slower than my estimate. Oh well, still taking an ice cream break in the heat of the day. It was going to be a beer break, but the beer is a block uphill out of the way and somehow although I'm intentionally biking 60+ miles today that feels too far.

@hyperlinkyourheart@mastodon.ie crossbody purse designed in an old fashioned postbag style. I brought everything for this journey (except the bike & rack) in one 'fit under the seat in front of me' carryon so have to improvise. I do find that classic practical design aesthetics frequently make things easier to improvise. To strap it to the bike I could close it and secure it fairly tightly and easily, but instead I open it, run the front flap back over the handlebars with the leather straps secured below it providing additional support and then the crossbody strap back over the seat for even more support and then I can use it as an improvised bike basket for my water bottle and phone cuz I'm constantly stopping for hydration and route check breaks.

@lednaBM@stranger.social I'm not sure the way we conceive of money or mental disorder is as innocent as you imply, or religion as bad. Many of the cultures I most admire actually have religion and concepts like health and economics more closely related than ours. To a certain extent I think the separation of concepts of right & wrong from economics and mental health is closer to a source of all the empowered assholery we get. Like I think if you had to have a relationship of trust instead of money to get things done, many many of our worst problems would vanish. Not sure if the same would be said if all the churches and Bibles disappeared.

@Frantasaur@mastodon.ie @JoBlakely@mastodon.social @weddige@gruene.social I watched someone demo how to jack a mobile card reader at a security conference more than a decade ago, and two decades ago it was done to all the customers of a huge retail chain (TJ Maxx) . It can be as simple as getting access to the Wi-Fi network or the device and it's a lot harder for staff & patrons to detect and they can collect more data faster and use it before they're detected as opposed to one at a time transactions through a sticker and hoping they're not shut down with charges reversed when someone reports the scam transaction. But again it's level of effort and investment by the thief versus the establishment. There's a lot of ways to scam people, and security is never guaranteed. Pickpockets still exist, and con men become billionaires and presidents 🫠

@JoBlakely@mastodon.social @Frantasaur@mastodon.ie @weddige@gruene.social yeah it's the general practice in the USA for them to take the credit card away. But mobile card readers can be hacked too, or people can do all kinds of different scams like impersonating staff(or even entire businesses). It's really just what people are invested in securing that makes security work 🤷‍♀️

@Frantasaur@mastodon.ie @weddige@gruene.social @JoBlakely@mastodon.social IMHO it's better to train people/yourself on what information is sensitive and how to recognize scams than to intentionally slow or deny access to whatever you're trying to promote or access. Like as an extension of your idea we shouldn't have clickable URLs in html because they're too likely to be a spammer. I would be more on board with making the email service or printer/publisher or business liable for what they provide access to than to slow individuals access to the info they want

@hopeless@mas.to Yes, the sheltered life part is exactly what I hear is true on this issue. The circumstances around us can leave us extremely unaware of the way someone else experiences the same thing. Some people might get occasionally rough reply interactions while some people get them everyday. I'm anti-speeding so I hate when they repave the streets near me - all the cars drive faster and people are more likely to get injured and die. However someone else has a bad back (from a previous car crash) so a bump can cause them immense pain. They will change their route to stay on nicely paved streets. We experience the same streets differently. This is also true on social media. Are you a speeding driver? Or someone who has been sensitized by being hit in the past?

@giomasce@mastodon.social because labor is not the same as a job in this context. Parents put quite a lot of labor into making their children's lives better but we don't call it a job. And generally the more directly you make people's lives better and particularly if it's in a self-directed eat the less money you make and the less likely we are to call it a job or career.

@hausfath@fediscience.org I think this is kind of like the economists of the mid 20th C who thought the number of working hours would go down .. like yes, we have made it technologically possible, but to meet those predictions we have to assume that the right wing is defeated everywhere. As the right wing gains increasing ascendancy over the largest military on the planet doesn't that increase the plausibility of higher emissions? Same as increased working hours?

@giomasce@mastodon.social right, I have a good job along those lines - but it would be better if I had the freedom to schedule myself or to help people in ways that are against the rules. Almost everyone I know who went into baking or cooking ended up quitting after too many years of too little pay and unreliable employers. Teachers have it possibly even worse with college debt, overwork, abusive parents and political environments and that's even before they're forced to compete/police against the largest companies on the planet. It's not that the labor is not worth doing, but the ways we've turned the good work/labor into bad jobs is the problem. This is pretty much exactly what I meant when I said that the better work, the worse the pay. When CEOs quit to become housecleaners and bakers and kindergarten teachers can afford to buy homes and raise families on their single salaries then I might be willing to call it a good job, but it's not that now, and it's not trending closer to that either.
