You know, honestly, more than monetary donations, if somebody worked at a company that had access to a lot of 18 terabyte and larger hard drives and could talk to us, that's where we are really suffering. The internet archive has no special priority in buying hard drives and those things are insane.

It's not normally a good idea to share internal security processes, but I did want to offer the funniest trivia in my work to fight spam - I just added gamepad support to my spam-fighting client, meaning I'm literally using a joystick and buttons to do the work.

Turns out, if you can consolidate part of your job to an Xbox controller, you can speed it up significantly.

Manuals Plus: The Wrap-Up

Just a little over ten years ago, I was notified about a big warehouse of manuals that was going to be discarded in a few days. Bursting with energy, I drove down, discussed things with the owner, …

Earlier this year, I became aware of STANDARD EBOOKS, a donation-dependent group of edtiors and layout experts who have been doing the amazing work of taking out-of-copyright books, turning them into top-quality ebooks, and then releasing them for free.

Some of the books they've done are in the Internet Archive here:

https://archive.org/details/standardebooks

They're seeking 75 patrons in December to keep themselves afloat, consider donating to this amazing cause.

MIT Press maintains a set of their books that are listed as "Open Access", and of them, 297 different books and documents provide a helpful PDF edition of their titles.

I have "ported" these over to the Internet Archive where they live a life and have links back to their original MIT Press pages should you want to buy a hard copy:

I acquired (with help) a killer audio cassette digitizing rig, and then IMMEDIATELY had to spend over 2 months digitizing 90+ cassettes from the 1999 Game Developers Conference (via a slow-and-steady workflow that got the job done without being too disruptive to any other work I was doing).

So, here we are, it's done. Go enjoy 70+ hours of presentations about all aspects of game making and producing, in 1999.

The internet archive is having a slight "HTML Outage" at the moment, and hoping to get it back pretty quick.

I was kindly handed another virus for the Malware Museum! We now have a (de-fanged) version of what's considered the first microcomputer virus, "Elk Cloner", in the Museum:

If you missed it the first time, DISCMASTER does semantic search after analyzing hundreds of millions of files locked deep down inside ISOs and BINs of CD-ROMs from the era when the CD-ROM reigned. We've already found long-lost media, buried citations, and forgotten applications and items. What now?

The new system will also be ingesting new CD-ROMs. How many? There are 20,000 it is beginning the process of adding. Within a few months, DISCMASTER will have a grip on so much material that otherwise would be endless time for researchers and fans to find. It's going to be amazing.
