@TimWardCam@c.im ‘she worked, as he had guessed, on the novel-writing machines in the Fiction Department. She enjoyed her work, which consisted chiefly in running and servicing a powerful but tricky electric motor. She was 'not clever', but was fond of using her hands and felt at home with machinery. She could describe the whole process of composing a novel, from the general directive issued by the Planning Committee down to the final touching-up by the Rewrite Squad.’

@cR0w@infosec.exchange I’d have to accept more responsibility for my dog escaping my control and biting someone (which touch wood will never happen) than an AI exec takes when their tamagotchi on steroids breaks containment and attacks a competitor. And if my pet was declared dangerous it’d be put to sleep.

Replying to
@ratsnakegames@mastodon.social @david_chisnall@infosec.exchange like when any psychic medium performs a stage show they need to say (in the UK at least) that they’re not claiming to be able to talk to the dead and that their performance is for entertainment purposes only. Yet more often than not the audience members fully believe the entertaining performer is a genuine spiritualist with a connection to the other side and wouldn’t have bought tickets otherwise. The boilerplate is passed off as a legal necessity, at odds with the overall impression being created and sold.

@PetraPhoenix@beige.party My late Nan in retirement used to do seamstress work for extra cash. A customer would regularly buy pyjama's for her bedridden husband and ask my Nan to reverse the seams on them, so that the seams were on the outside and didn't trouble his sensitive skin. For some reason this was preferable over turning them inside out.

@malwaretech I was very interested in the part you described as "skipping a step" where the AI found a perfect vuln and you ran with it. But on reflection it found a shortlist and it was your skills in reviewing the shortlist that found the perfect vuln. Reminds me of how people reviewing a cold reading session recalled the accurate information the fake psychic had delivered but were then shown where in the transcript that information was first mentioned and realised that the techniques simply gave them a framework to supply information that the coldreader could then claim credit for knowing.

1st world middle class problems.
Someone just sent me a file I'd asked for, so I responded with 'Ta'
For the international audience this is informal British for 'Thanks'
https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/ta
They responded with 'NP' - An initialism for 'No Problem' All very polite and well mannered. But it does occur to me that by responding with an initialism it reframes my original response as potentially an initialism for 'Thanks A lot" which is fine I guess, but it feels a little like when you ask someone "do you want a crisp?" and they take two. I've offered thanks but they've potentially inferred 'Thanks A Lot" Which just like the extra crisp, they're absolutely welcome to but nonetheless leaves a slight sense of imbalance.

If their corporate overlords get to reorganise to use less labour then the job are gone whether by burning down the warehouse, warehouse staff going on strike or the employers just deciding it's time to restructure.

Damn, thought I'd found a wonder food. I'd scanned it into Carbs and Cals and seen the values seemed too good to be true. They were. It was showing me the nutritional info for 100g. But a single portion is 400g.

The disclaimer is only there if you want to market one thing and be regulated as another. Technically, the disclaimer makes no substantive difference, what matters is the overall impression created by their activities as a whole. Yet fake psychics abound while governments and corporations are slashing budgets in the expectation of a AI dividend which has yet to manifest any more convincingly than a message for someone in the audience called J

My wife almost got scammed by #Cognius
These sneaky sneaks offer an IQ quiz and then need you to set up an account and pay 79p to see the results. What they don't make obvious is that includes a £30 monthly subscription to their 10 minute a day brain training app that is taken from your card on short notice.
The reviews on Trust Pilot are illuminating. All the positive reviews are showing as "invited" reviews. Which on closer inspection is unsurprising as some of these reviews are docking points for having been forced to review in order to continue using the app. The vendor answers all the negative reviews. This is made easier by all answers being substantially the same "We would like to clarify that Cognius is not a fraudulent service. Subscription terms are clearly presented before the purchase is completed, and a subscription is automatically activated after 3 days with the relevant information provided in advance." Would have thought that a service striving to be "non-fraudulent" might examine how clear they're making these subscription terms after the 50th time of writing this in the two months it's been active.
As far as my wife is concerned she had no recollection of any subscription terms being mentioned until I looked into the initial charge; searched what it was for and found the reviews. Only after that did she check her inbox and found an email that was sent, after she'd already signed up.
