Elon Musk and Peter Thiel: The billionaires fomenting a global race war For the ideologues of the billionaire class, the favoured strategy to hold on to power is to rile the masses into genocidal hate, to whip up fear, anything to stop them from joining the dots and turning on the billionaires who are expropriating our present and future and profiting from permanent war. It is a time of nightmares. We must wake up. Nothing revolutionary in this article, but I appreciate the common thread it weaves in explaining how we have gotten to such a desperate point and I also appreciate how much the writer despises Peter Thiel. I am so tired of having endless discussions about the sky falling with our attention span and social media rots our brains blah blah blah and no one will address the blatant crime that we have ceded control of our digital lives to dumb, fascist wannabe fuedal rightwing edgelord billionaires.

The end times fascists are plotting their escape from our world. Our mission is clear And among tech oligarchs, Bezos is all too typical. Peter Thiel, for one, once revealed that his three best ideas for achieving true freedom are “cyberspace”, “outerspace” and “seasteading” (the idea of building new countries on floating oil rigs). In other words, this man, whose enormous wealth affords him access to the most spectacular settings our planet has to offer, actually believes these three cold, dead places are superior to the Earth we have, verdant and alive. Something similar seems amiss with Elon Musk, a man who seems to look up at the wonders of the night sky and see only opportunities to fill that inky unknown with his own space junk. The venerable novelist Joyce Carol Oates highlighted these apparent limits in the fall of 2025 when she roasted him ruthlessly on his own platform, X. “So curious,” she wrote, “that such a wealthy man never posts anything that indicates that he enjoys or is even aware of what virtually everyone appreciates – scenes from nature, pet dog or cat, praise for a movie, music, a book (but doubt that he reads); pride in a friend’s or relative’s accomplishment; condolences for someone who has died; pleasure in sports, acclaim for a favorite team; references to history. In fact he seems totally uneducated, uncultured. The poorest persons on Twitter [X] may have access to more beauty & meaning in life than the ‘most wealthy person in the world.’” The observation clearly got under the tech baron’s notoriously thin skin: he called her “a lazy liar” and began posting approvingly about various movies to prove Oates wrong.

Forget ‘superintelligence’: error-prone AI nearly sparked world war three this month | Timnit Gebru and Emily M Bender A series of events almost got us to armageddon, not caused by “rogue, superintelligent AI”, but by government reliance on error-prone systems that are marketed by their manufacturers as being close to superintelligent. A CNN report published on 18 September, which hasn’t been verified by other major outlets, describes how the US “almost started a war” with China, based on an intelligence report that claimed a Chinese ship was transporting components of nuclear weapons. Military personnel made plans to intercept the Chinese vessel, complete with aircraft and soldiers ready to board the ship. A military skirmish of this kind between China and the US could quickly escalate and spiral into world war three. It was only moments before executing on the plan that American officials further investigated the intelligence report and found that it had been generated with the use of a chatbot and contained erroneous information about the vessel’s contents. This is why this crap is dangerous, it isn’t because it works it is because it is broken in ways that are so dangerous they have already almost caused a nuclear war with China…

Microsoft exec called AI scraping the “largest theft of labor in human history” Perhaps most explosively, Microsoft Director of Applied Science Brent Hecht repeatedly warned in documents that scraping news for AI training was “an astonishing theft of unprecedented proportions,” calling it perhaps the “largest theft of labor in human history,” news orgs said. In another document, Hecht contradicted Microsoft and OpenAI’s argument that training AI on news content is fair use, suggesting that the plan to widely scrape news made “a complete mockery of the idea of ‘fair use.’” Fuck you pay me

Projected Spatial Asymmetry of Daytime and Nighttime Temperature Extremes in the Middle East under CMIP6 Warming Fig. 5 Spatial clustering of day–night asymmetry in projected temperature extremes during summer (JJA) under SSP5-8.5 for 2075–2100. Panels show Getis–Ord Gi* clusters for (a) A90 and (b) Amax. A central implication of the analysis is that future heat change should not be interpreted only through regional mean warming or through direct numerical comparison among indices with different units. Percentile-based and intensity-based indices represent different dimensions of heat extremes: TX90p and TN90p describe changes in the frequency of exceedance above fixed historical warm thresholds, whereas TXx and TNx describe changes in the intensity of the hottest daytime and nighttime events. Similarly, the negative regional mean values of A90 and Amax indicate a general tendency toward daytime-dominated amplification, but this response is not spatially uniform. Localized nighttime-dominated areas remain important, particularly where insufficient nighttime cooling may increase cumulative heat burden. These findings have implications for climate-risk assessment and adaptation planning. Spatially coherent hotspot regions may face increasing pressure on energy systems, outdoor labor, infrastructure, public-health preparedness, and ecosystem resilience. At the same time, localized nighttime amplification may be relevant for heat-health risks because warm nights can reduce physiological recovery from daytime heat exposure, especially in coastal or relatively humid environments. However, this study does not directly quantify population exposure, vulnerability, mortality, humidity-related heat stress, or sector specific impacts.

Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is a synthetic chemical that plays a critical role as an electrical insulator in high-voltage equipment. The gas is odorless, invisible, non-toxic and non-flammable. But it is also a climate killer, 24,300 times more effective at warming the planet than carbon dioxide on a pound-for-pound basis. Once released, sulfur hexafluoride remains in the atmosphere for 1,000 years. Emissions come primarily from the electric power sector, where the gas is used in circuit breakers and other high-voltage equipment to prevent electricity from arcing. Nearly indestructible, SF6 serves as a critical backstop for any modern electric grid, ensuring that electricity flows only when and where it is needed. However, when electrical equipment in China reaches the end of its useful life, much of the gas is likely vented into the atmosphere.

Although the Office of Naval Research funded much of the early climate change research, the Defense Department successfully pushed to omit most reporting of military emissions from global climate agreements like the Kyoto Protocol. The Defense Department knew it was the United States’ largest petroleum user and said so. It also knew that its emissions would come under scrutiny if they were known, and that pursuing preeminence was emissions-intensive and undermined global climate goals. … The US national security community’s approach to climate has not only been mirrored by NATO but amplified by private organizations such as the International Military Council on Climate Security, which produces an annual World Climate and Security Report. These doomsday scenarios often ignore the necessity of emissions reductions and capacity building. They are lifeboat and drawbridge approaches to security on the assumption that it is already too late. The figures below, from the 2022 Department of Defense Climate Risk Analysis, illustrates the assessment that climate change will lead to conflict and increased demand for the military to perform humanitarian missions. Defense Department views of climate change. Top: Examples of connections between climate hazards, primary and secondary climate impacts, and security implications. Bottom: Selected regional hazards worsened by climate change (key to symbols on the top row above map) and identified security implications (key to symbols on the bottom row below the map). This map illustrates some of the key risks by region, but is not comprehensive of all risk. (2022 Department of Defense Climate Risk Analysis)

Critical thinking is less a skill and more a value. I disagree fundamentally, I think it is a self-deceiving trap to fall into the belief that critical thinking is a value you can hold up to the light and check to see if it is true and then place back within your heart… critical thinking is rather a practice which is why good universities emphasize that they are not there to distribute information but as centers of practice with regards to learning. In musical practice there is always the requirement for self reflection and adjustment, that is why good teachers are so helpful, they point out what is invisible to you but overwhelming present in blocking your further progress. What inspires people to practice are not values, rather only some genuine desire for the pursuit itself can motivate you without burning you out to the core.
