@jayalane@mathstodon.xyz The most important thing for me was having a very understanding and patient wife. It was also helpful to find a very accommodating PI. I was working full time for the whole process, so it took 6 years.

@jayalane@mathstodon.xyz only tangentially. I work as a software engineer, but I work *for* a commercial clinical research lab. My PhD is quantitative biology. Although I was originally considering moving into teaching at a liberal arts college (i.e. non research), the academic environment here in the U.S. is not exactly stable right now. And any positions that are available I’d rather leave to new graduates just starting their careers.
