@GhostOnTheHalfShell@masto.ai And yet, I also hear distant laughter... Probably at all those millions of Alexas alone sold to watchful Europeans.

@KathyReid I often dream that dream too.
And then I remember: when the internet was domesticated around 2004 the usual scare tactics played their part. But above all it actually used to take some skills to grapple with the new inter-beast, learn html, ftp, menu trees, graphics conversion etc.
Guess who didn't like any of that?
Slop-enshitti-net's what we got because most had better things to do than learn, apparently.

Remember "right first time"? Oh how we laughed (in some countries). Looks like the last laugh's on us, though.
Brilliant vid! And I love the double irony.

@actualham They prolly also strongly advised to use google chrome because, well, the internet loves it. Good times for good people.

@Ameboid@mastodon.social Well put!
They tell us AI empowers people... To me, AI is the price we pay for getting too lazy to learn.

@_thegeoff If I were on Artemis I'd keep reminding everyone how Apollo 8 got there faster, quietly, and AI-free. Naturally I'd get shot through the airlock soon enough.
So, either way, that's why I'm not on Artemis.
Just found @helenczerski@fediscience.org here, but it looks like she too has moved on as of this year.
Shame. I re-watched her Science of Bubbles programme recently and found it ever so inspiring. In absentia at least - thank you!

Must say, I suspected this (call it negative thinking) and it's good to find more evidence.
Best of luck fighting it, Mallory. But the so-called economy will fight you, too.
@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social They're shutting down the boring, infant-friendly side of it. But I doubt they've given up on the idea. Far from it...

@evacide@hachyderm.io Pleasant thought. And feasible - once we revive our emaciated organic economy to pay the bills. Stand by...

@ScottishGreens@mastodon.scot Brilliant! That should help more dogs to be called dogs by their owners, not rescues.

Good call from you guys though. Let's hope it sinks in... Maybe.

@Tutanota@mastodon.social On the plus side: we'd all become very kind & caring citizens. Ostensibly.

@badastro@mastodon.social Moreover, he's actually been at it for quite a wee while (Starlink project). But it's never too late to ask, "why?"
The stock answer would be, "To help people connect (in the wilderness)." Good night, and good luck!

@nixCraft@mastodon.social Question remains, how many of those 300 will agree to be rehired?
Sheep's clothing is bad enough, but wolf's clothing clearly says, don't buy me a drink again, EVER!

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social Interesting discussion, thank you.
Was already aware of Starlink's shocking targets (1M new sats to, uh, "connect" folk in remote areas), but plans to effectively steal the night at a button push was news to me.
As to their true agenda? Pseudo-charitable hogwash aside, my guess is simple: future growth. Less night = more active people, shopping, working, sharing - longer.
They can't slow Earth's spin. But some think they can spin us any way the corporate winds blow.

@Danpiker@mathstodon.xyz Pretty neat trick, I like it.
Next we need one to corroborate what B-Bob in Fargo said about why we can see more shades of green than any other colour.

@Ashedryden@xoxo.zone Fully agree with you on 2.
As for two-tier internet - ever since some clever clogs came up with the magic word "premium", segregation was born. Not too many complaints neither, looks like.
