They/Them

“There were two “Reigns of Terror,” if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the “horrors” of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror—that unspeakably bitter and awful Terror which none of us has been taught to see in its vastness or pity as it deserves.” - Mark Twain

If it’s “Putin’s narrative” that war’s start for more complex reasons than “some nation’s are just evil and bad” then I fear he has a better understanding of how the world works than someone who buys that premise.

Certainly much of the immediate death is at the hands of the Russian ruling class but to claim this happened in isolation of broader geopolitical forces because Russia just does that is infantile and chauvinistic. This is my issue with the meme. Atlanticist nations are active participants in this war and it is not even their workers dying for it. It is Ukrainian workers dying for Atlanticist goals. Imperialist war is a disgusting awful thing where workers are forced to die for the interests of their oppressors but at least the Russians are dying for Russia. Even if Ukraine miraculously “wins” this war there will not be a free Ukraine. Their rulers owe the west too much. This is a war over ownership of Ukrainian resources and labor power, nothing more.

I’m tired and had a bit to drink so I won’t be super in depth here and I apologize for that but I will explain my reasoning as simply as possible. The 2022 and previous state of NATO member nations economic relationship with Russia was one of opportunism and convenience that does not reflect their long term strategic goals in the region. Ukraine declared neutrality on the matter because it knew joining NATO would lead to it being invaded. This changed after the highly western backed and financed Maiden “revolution”. This occured concurrently with the Russian invasion of Crimea and it is arguable that both influenced each other in turn. Russia recognized the changing political tides towards western powers in Ukraine and responded to it while Ukrainian nationalism swelled in response to Russian invasion.

I wish I were paid to talk about this shit. I do it because seeing people reduce international conflicts to simplified narritives like “country bad” or “leader evil” is infuriating. Nations are complex political organs governed by their current base material conditions that have developed over the course of their history, the state of their internal class conflict, and the resulting overarching ideology created by these factors. They are not controlled by the whims of an individual but rather the economic interests of their ruling class.

Don’t like the implication that european nations are just hapless little fishies hounded by predator. This is a large geopolitical war between economic blocs. The Europeans have agency and actively pushed boundaries as well. They aren’t victims of a mindless aggressor attacking them out of pure instinct. Both sides of this conflict have distinct political-economic motives that led to this war. Nation’s are rational actors.

You don't have to agree with the regime to know US/Israeli attempts to over throw it will be worse for the Iranian people. The external contradiction facing Iran must be overcome before the internal contradictions can be resolved. There is no social growth under imperial boots.

They did in 2020, and then they did nothing to prevent fascism. The fascist did not face serious detrimental consequences of any kind. In fact they actively coveted and aided Israeli fascist which harmed their ability to get reelected.

I mostly agree. I see nothing wrong with voting, though I understand the folks who didn't vote in the last presidential election. I don't think voting matters all that much outside of local elections but do what you will. It's getting a lot of hate rn because it has felt very ineffective at preventing fascism and people are seeking alternatives.

I voted dumbass, it didn't fucking matter and it never will because voting can't stop fascism. Liberal democracy does not have an internal route for stopping fascists. It has failed to do so in every historical moment where it had the chance.

My problem is not with the individual my issue is with the deomcratic party. You are correct that there wasn't anything Biden could actually do on his own. It would take a collective effort and likely military cooperation. It would cause political mayhem and be detrimental to the country as a whole and possibly destroyed the democratic party. It could prevent fascism though. I'm not saying any of this is easy or legal but it could have prevented fascism. Instead they did nothing of consequence. I am personally of the opinion that fascism is incapable of being prevented through official means under capitalist liberal democracy so everything I say here is effectively meaningless. I'm sort of arguing that people in a system incapable of stopping fascism should have just done it anyway. Point is, you either have to accept that the democrats did nothing to stop fascism or that capitalist liberal democracy is incapable of stopping it and should be abandoned. Assuming you agree that the Trump administration is fascist. You would probably refer to me as an authoritarian yeah but I think the term is meaningless. As far as I'm concerned all states are authoritarian and my endgoal is the dissolution of all states. Edit: Roe v Wade should have been codified far before they had the chance to dismantle it but the democrats used it like a carrot on a stick.

Fascist should not be treated the same as a normal political opponent. You NEED to purge them from your government as soon as possible. You can spot proto-fascists, it is possible. Why in gods green earth would you wait until they have established power to challenge them, that's stupid as hell. I'm sorry if it disturbs your liberal sensibilities but fascists deserve to be oppressed. They won't hesitate to oppress you when they get power

My argument is not that the democrats are worse than republicans by nature. I think they are ontologically evil, yes, but I do agree republicans are worse. My complaint is that they are an insufficient tool for preventinf fascism and should be abandoned as the primary route.

Pacifism is not a virtue in and of itself. These people are going to murder me and the people who are supposed to prevent that have done nothing of value. I'm sorry your precious liberal values stop you from defending yourself. If liberal democracy can do nothing to prevent fascism then liberal democracy should be replaced. ::: spoiler my other comment My problem is not with the individual my issue is with the deomcratic party. Edit: Roe v Wade should have been codified far before they had the chance to dismantle it but the democrats used it like a carrot on a stick. ::: for added detail I understand not wanting to do violence, trust me I do. I hope I never have to hurt anyone in my life, so far I haven't done so physically or on purpose. It does need to be done though. We are having violence done to us and it is okay to respond violently.

That's how they get you to work multiple jobs for more hours to extract further value. If you are surviving then you are being paid the value of your labor power or being subsidized by family.

I said Europe for a reason but Canada is part of NATO no? NATO is effectively the economic bloc I am referring to here so increasing tensions with Russia at least happened with Canada’s acceptance. Regardless Canada is not genuinely threatened by Russia and their support for the war in Ukraine is primarily along geopolitical lines.

Depends on the map, time, culture, and location depicted. Often they are just decorative but sometimes, especially when depicted in streams, near coastlines, and in bays/harbors they denote nonvisible underwater obstacles that could harm your ship. They can also denote particularly harsh waters ship graveyards.

Sort of, NATO was practicing an method of economic and physical encirclement intended to suffocate the Russian economy. I don’t personally think this was feasible but Russia has for about 2 decades and made their stance clear on this matter. If NATO continued on this path it would lead to war. Russia has stated this repeatedly and high ranking members of NATO have as well. Everyone involved knew this but to NATO’s credit, they pushed those boundaries for a very long time and Russia never actually did anything about it. Mostly because it was not economically or militarily feasible. Ukraine was the final red line though. Sure, morally speaking, one nation should not be able to limit the treaties another nation decides to make or coalitions they try to join but geopolitics is not governed by morality. It was stupid to believe that Russia would just accept Ukraine’s entrance into NATO which is why no one in power genuinely believed this. Russia was not going to accept an alliance that allowed for a military buildup so close to their key infrastructure and ballistic missiles within 8 minutes of Moscow. Russia fully understands that NATO is an imperial organ and necessarily a threat to its existence as a decently sized economy largely independent of it and brimming with natural resources. Russia didn’t “have to” invade Ukraine but if it didn’t it would effectively look like rolling over to their largest geopolitical enemy and strictly speaking, put them in a strategically compromise position. This doesn’t make it morally right or a great thing that I just fucking love but in the world of real politik it is rational. They weren’t forced into this action but were put in a position where not doing it would be strategically untenable in the long term. The Russian ruling class is simply protecting their economic interests.
