Yikes, Encryption’s Y2K Moment is Coming Years Early

Google moved up its estimated deadline for quantum preparedness in cryptography to 2029—only 33 months from now. That’s earlier than previous deadlines, and they proposed the new post-quantum migration deadline because of two new papers that comprise a big jump in the state of the technology. It’s ahead of schedule, but not altogether unexpected. Cryptographers and engineers have been working on this for years, and as the deadline gets closer, it’s not surprising to see more precise timeline est

2000s: war on general purpose computing because of copyright 2020s: war on general purpose computing because of child protection In the 2000s the forces of freedom mostly won, e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consumer_Broadband_and_Digital_Television_Promotion_Act didn't become law. So far it seems that we are currently losing. :(

Yes, you did: OpenID. I remember when I first read about it (late 2000s? not sure when), I thought it was an awesome idea and surely the web of the future would be full of “log in with OpenID” buttons. Instead it is now full of “log in with Google”, “log in with Facebook”, “log in with Microsoft” buttons.

When I read about people worrying about that, I always wonder how many people don't turn their oven off immediately before or after taking out the food they prepared in it?! Assuming that it's been a while since the last time you used it, why would it ever be on? Now forgetting to properly turn the oven *on* (turning only one of the two knobs necessary to turn it on) when preparing food, that has definitely happened to me too a few times. :(

The countries that were ruled as single-party states by communist parties in the 20th century, including those that survive until today, called themselves "socialist" and called the goal they were supposedly working towards "communism". Of course all of this ideology was always nonsense. The liberal revolutions of the centuries before that were all about taking power away from the (monarchical/aristocratic) government in order to establish a society in which the government was elected by, and served, the people, and there were no longer any formally defined classes and all inequalities that remained were about income and property, which were (at least ideally) possible to overcome through one's own achievements... why did communists ever think that the next step after that might be to once again establish a powerful government that serves as the only (or only major) employer, that's a movement precisely in the other direction, not the natural next step... So as much as communists may mock the idea that "socialism is when the government does stuff, the more stuff it does the more socialist it is, and when the government does everything it's communism", I think that (while very simplified) is certainly a more accurate description of things than what communists claim their movement is about. Government and people are never going to have the same interests and it's generally a good thing to take power away from the government and let the people handle things through free association; it's a bad thing to do the opposite.

With chat control we actually have to distinguish two different things that people sometimes confuse:

  • voluntary chat control ("chat control 1.0"), which is currently already the law in the EU
  • mandatory chat control ("chat control 2.0"), proposed in 2022

Voluntary chat control is about letting operators of communication services voluntarily scan messages for certain illegal activity (without this constituting a violation of data protection laws). This doesn't break encryption and isn't a part of a war on general purpose computing. While there are many good arguments against it, it's not especially catastrophic. It's a detail of business regulation.

Mandatory chat control is about forcing them to do so, which must necessarily break encryption and impose limits on software freedom. This is what is most important to oppose.

The most recent win ended up rejecting even (most) voluntary chat control, which is a good sign that mandatory chat control won't get a majority either.

“Heritage is duty” refers to the heritage of computing, not of human beings. Completely non-outrageous in context. “Command is service”, ok, that explains why Omarchy isn’t a democracy. I think many other FOSS projects aren’t either, so I don’t see anything outrageous in that either. And you may of course disagree with their opinion on “Code-of-Conduct struggle sessions and identity-overload nonsense” (not words I would have used). Many completely well-meaning people hold different opinions on those topics.

Nobody is banning the youth from accessing wikipedia or a library or minecraft. Wikipedia has pornographic images and videos in it (certainly in its media archive, Wikimedia Commons, and some of them are embedded in articles). Library: ??? Are we still talking about the Internet? But also, if the parents decide that it’s part of growing up they can just give their kids access to porn. Yes. Giving kids access to the open Internet is giving them access to a repository of nearly all human knowledge and endeavors, including (but not limited to) porn. If parents believe their child isn’t yet developmentally ready to be exposed to all human knowledge and endeavors, they shouldn’t be giving that child (unsupervised) access to a worldwide information system whose entire purpose is to provide access to exactly that.

Hopefully. I am already on both sites (though on reddit I hardly ever start new threads and only use it on desktop) and would love getting opportunities to talk about all the topics here that I currently talk about only on reddit. It is so incredible. I used to think the main threat to a free and open Internet was copyright. Then in the mid-2010s the talking points against it shifted to misinformation and hate speech. Now it’s age verification? How did we get here?

Congratulations, you’ve just managed to advertise the exact thing you oppose. I would likely have given zero attention or thought to Omarchy today if I hadn’t seen this thread. Also, I just read that “The Omarchy Doctrine” page; if someone seriously thinks that is a “fascist creed”, then that is very interesting. About the person who thinks that. If someone could help me figure out what part of that is supposed to be outrageous or especially controversial, I’d appreciate any help!

Decentralisation is a well-known trope in Cyberlibertarianism, as the late David Golumbia has already explained in his book of the same title (read Aline’s thoughts about it here). I remember finding some of the writings of David Golumbia some years ago. At first I thought it was making me unreasonably angry that someone might believe such wrong and stupid things, but as I thought more about it, I realized that my anger was actually very reasonable. Hint: pretty much everyone thinks their own ideas are “progressive” because the word “progress” generally has a positive cultural connotation!
