@mcnees@mastodon.social These days you would also want to look at the physicist’s computer desktop. On campus I keep a part of my work desk tidy, so I can interact with students during office hours. The same cannot be said about my computer desktop!

@mcnees@mastodon.social Indeed, my department has been hosting an annual lecture series featuring Nobel laureates as the speakers for over twenty years. At least one of the speakers had the replica medal for the audience to handle.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social Or the user has just given up and moved on. I requested fixed IP addresses for a pair of internal servers from campus ITS three months ago. I eventually just moved them to DHCP. Hardly ideal, but things are working again.

@drlucyrogers@mastodon.social I always chuckle when I see the phrase "You must be a Rocket Scientist." I live in a town (Huntsville, AL) where there is a high probability that a random person you meet on the street is an actual "Rocket Scientist."

@BackFromTheDud @Waterfox Google has come a long way from "Do no evil"! The more important question is there an option to disable this "feature"?

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social I wonder how much fuel is budgeted to do the "LEO weave"? Never mind, what are the odds that there isn't a failure of controlability (uplink comms, onboard processing, thrusters, etc): Tl;dr vanishingly small

@mattblaze@federate.social Last week I had to buy a pair of these hybrid charging cables. I hear this is to save installing a single resistor. I think the cables cost more than a resistor... Where is the EU when we need them?

@mattblaze@federate.social @xenotar@mastodon.social @SteveBellovin@infosec.exchange The standard eye piece tube (1 1/4”) would cause all sorts of vignetting. I have upgraded mine to a 2” tube (add on kit). That’s certainly more than the 35 mm diagonal. So far I have not mounted a camera, as there is no good way of physically supporting it.

@lina@vt.social As a MacPorts maintainer and a FreeBSD sysadmin, I run into two problems with rust: 1) It is unwieldy to maintain rust and cargo, so both are often out of date on MacPorts. 2) On FreeBSD some random library (e.g. librsvg) that depends on rust/cargo causes Poudriere to rebuild rust every time some build dependency is updated. This usually takes several hours on my build machine. For this reason, and that it adds a lot of extra packages, MacPorts still doesn't use librsvg built using rust.

It's been so dark here that the supercap in my weather station has run empty. I hadn't needed to replace the backup battery in years. Well now it's raining and I need to swap it...

Oh joy! I added Google* to my robots.txt file, but that blocks the Google bots from seeing the noindex meta tag. Once I add the code only to deliver the noindex tag to Google (and who knows, perhaps some others) I'll have to unblock their bots.

@NeueWelle@mastodon.social @marcoarment@mastodon.social Under FreeBSD pkg update downloads the currently available package list, while pkg upgrade downloads and installs the outdated packages. In the MacPorts world that corresponds to port sync and port upgrade outdated.

@elsandosgrande@pleroma.envs.net @lina@vt.social It's the other way around: rust is rebuilt when packages that are used to build rust itself are updated. librsvg then gets rebuilt using the new version of rust. P.S. Poudriere often produces an identical rust package, as the changes in the development tools may cause no change in rust itself.
