Racism offers a simple solution to a complex problem: you are poor or alone. Powerful people convince you that it's (Black people)'s fault that you are poor. They convince you that if you just hate them enough, it will fix all of your problems. But hate though you may, you still remain just as poor. In the moment, hate makes you feel strong. It makes you forget how poor you are. If you're wealthy, it might give you a sense of community or a maladaptive outlet for your frustrations elsewhere in your life. Either way, it gives you a sense of power and belonging. The problem is that hate doesn't solve problems. It only creates problems. You may be insulated from the most of these problems, but your ability to see the world becomes warped. You don't know how to fix problems anymore, you only know how to blame and point fingers.

sci-fi as stories set in the future generally like to imagine what future tech will look like, but it'd be nice if just once they would spend a second in a dollar store and imagine what premium tech of today would be common and cheap in the future

Is anybody else watching *The* Ghost in the Shell? Every episode is full of pleasant little "oh that's where that came from" moments. My favorite GitS entry overall is probably Innocence, and to see the DNA of it like this is just great.
