Trail running, maps, and, when time permits, math.

Might reject follow requests if I can't determine that there's a human behind it. It's nothing personal.

Wowww. A run right from within the Anchorage city limits. Almost bailed multiple times. So glad I didn’t haul those snowshoes for nothing. #running #trailrunning #alaska

Mug expert here, this is not funny. Mugs only do this when they're in extreme distress.

Mixed feelings about lots of things, but one thing is for sure: wow, those mountains are big. #denali #alaska

Far from a state of the art sort of method, but a post about using 1D scanlines to track horizon visibility and shade heightfield terrain with soft shadows and ambient occlusion. Big tip of the hat to Karim Naaji for the core idea. https://rreusser.github.io/notebooks/line-sweep-terrain-lighting/

Connected line sweep shadow computation to the terrain renderer. Lots of minor issues, but it could be worse.

@csk it’s a single tiling. Each supertile is assigned a color, and it blends the colors across a couple ancestor levels above and below the current view scale. As you zoom out, small tiles get aggregated and their color influence disappears. Then it’s just a brute force random search for a distant but connected tree that matches the starting point for five substitution levels. Zoom, pan, and loop! The aggregation is questionable and has seams, so I had to brute force the rendering a bit to patch over it, but I ended up pretty happy with the result!

Anyone have an e-reader they like? Amazon will stop supporting library books on my 16 year old Kindle, and I'd like a replacement for an upcoming trip. I hate that tech is disposable, but 16 years was a pretty good run. Main constraint is that I'll pay extra to avoid ad-supported awfulness.

@Krazov WIP. A little janky and fragile, so although this really is navigating between identical subtrees, I definitely patched over some rough edges to get it to look nice! Will publish… soonish.

TIL I am a robot. This is very small on an iPhone screen and cannot be zoomed. The audio variant does not play. Entered my best guess, 7800, and nothing happened. Got past it though by quitting and just clicking the sign in button again, which did not present a captcha. No human would have tried that.

@divbyzero@mathstodon.xyz oh! I should have scrolled down farther. Then I’ll spoil it and add that what I liked about it is that knowledge that it’s a brain-teaser can help you solve it. It’s not really a brain teaser unless the solution is interesting since Martin Gardner probably isn’t going to lob calculus questions at you, so we can guess that the solution is constant, and if there’s no dependence on the particular geometry, the hole might as well have radius zero, leaving a sphere, which trivially has volume 36pi, which happens to be correct in general!

@divbyzero@mathstodon.xyz reminds me of the Martin Gardner problem where you drill though a sphere. If the length of the hole ends up at six inches, what is the volume of the remaining material? I won’t spoil it, but I always found the simplest way to the solution pretty enjoyable.

@neozhaoliang@mathstodon.xyz Lovely! Here's what might be a more authentic reference. I feel weird that the SEO of my half-baked notebook has eclipsed some of the source material. 🙈 http://three-body.ipb.ac.rs/bh.php

@ireneista it computes a weighted blend of colors based on the hierarchy of tiles. As a tile gets small, it’s replaced with an aggregate block and the color contribution of the children fades, while parent colors fade in.
