"It's only ARP. It‘'s worked for forty years. How much can it really matter❓" Following up on A Farewell to ARPs, Remco van Mook responds to the questions he got over the article and explains why the answer lies not only in ARP itself, but in the whole “IPv4 layer cake” that has been layered on top of it over the past four decades. 🎂 👀 See what lies beneath ARP: https://labs.ripe.net/author/remco-van-mook/whats-arp-got-to-do-with-it/

What's ARP Got to Do with It?

It's only ARP. It works. So how much can it really matter? The answer lies beyond ARP itself, in the IPv4 layer cake that grew around it over four decades. The IPv4 internet is not going away in bounded time, and nobody should pretend otherwise.

Could IPv4 operate over IPv6-only infrastructure without ARP❓ Following our recent article on how BoF sessions help new ideas gain consensus at the IETF, here is one proposal heading to IETF 126 in Vienna. Remco van Mook tells the story behind the proposal and explains why, if you operate a network, you might need to care. 🔍 Explore the proposal: https://labs.ripe.net/author/remco-van-mook/a-farewell-to-arps-ipv4-service-on-ipv6-only-networks/

A Farewell to ARPs: IPv4 Service on IPv6-Only Networks

IPv6-only networks often still depend on IPv4 subnets and ARP. This article introduces an IETF proposal to eliminate both, allowing IPv4 to operate as a service over IPv6-only infrastructure without translation or tunnelling.

BGP location communities offer a rare glimpse into where networks actually interconnect, but most remain undocumented and opaque.❓

In this new RIPE Labs article, Thomas Krenc shows that, by exploiting measurable spatial patterns in routing data, it is possible to infer city-level locations at scale using only passive observations.
