Feel like writing an operating system from scratch just to make good use of this knockoff Windows XP wallpaper photo from my last hiking trip in Switzerland.

Afterwards I could use the individual layers and information about vias between the layers to connect these conductive paths globally, giving me a similarly pretty image of the whole chip (excluding the actual doped silicon regions that make up transistors).
Here you can even more clearly see the rows of 'standard cells' fed with two different power supply rails, GND/VSS and VDD.

Of course, now I know there are tools to do this, and this process even has a name: “netlist extraction”. But back then, I had absolutely no idea what was doing, and thus I wrote a very simple tool to do this in an afternoon.
Why the colors? I was checking to make sure the individual rectangles of that layer were correctly being 'connected' together into a single conductive path. Rendering that into a .png was the easiest way to make sure it worked, because brains are good at spotting patterns.
