European Historical Ceramics
I'm a potter in the Southern Netherlands/German border region. A region with a tradition of slipware ceramics dating back to the 16th Century.
My work is based in that tradition but I do considder myself a contemporary potter.
If you want to see my work do check: https://pixelfed.de/pottenbakkerij_hoogland or go to my website: https://niekhoogland.nl/
NOTE: I DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO USE ANY CONTENT OF MY POSTS TO BE MANIPULATED WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE!
In the 19th century the Westerwald produced millions of wheel thrown, saltglazed minneralwater bottles for the German market and jenever bottles for the jenever distilleries in the Netherlands.
This bottle shelve can be seen at the wonderfull Keramikmuseum Westerwald in Höhr-Grenzhausen.

Trade in food was strictly regulated in large parts of the Netherlands from the 17th Century on.
Strawberries and other soft fruit had to be packed and transported in special pots.
Usually a cup or bowl with a heavy foot and a hole in the bottom to prevent moisture to foul the fruit. Most market towns had their own measure for soft fruits and only licenced potters were allowed to produce these strawberry cups.
#Fermentation and Korean #onggi have become very fashionable. But it is not so very long ago that #preservation and fermantation were common in most North-Western European households.
With the loss of this preservation culture local potters lost an important source of imcome.

Round bottom pot with iron slip decoration on the shoulder.
Made in Schinveld, Limburg, NL. around 1000 year ago.
The developments in ceramics in that period eventually led to the first European stoneware in the 14th C.
