I'm new to hosting a #matrix server and am still learning how to do server admin and moderation, much less figure out how to teach laypeople. I was digging through matrix 2025 conference recordings and found this really awesome talk from @andybalaam@mastodon.social about demistifying the matrix crypto terminology.
TLDR as I understand it: you have a password to prove to the server who you are. You have a recovery key to prove your identity to other people. The problem with #discord ID verification is that you have to prove your "identity" to a centralized server, which is Not Good. What's different with matrix and proving your "identity" (the terms have different definitions based on the platform) is that the server doesn't care, identity is only used in a distributed fashion to let you talk to others.
