I've seen this pattern enough to look for it. But yeah this one I lived thru so I have first hand experience of being a younger programmer where the programmer's perspective was taken into account. And more and more programmers are made to do what they are told in spite of strongly disagreeing with the tech or methodology or concept etc. By the time I'm a "senior" developer I effectively have less input into projects than i did as an entry level programmer. What happens in that situation in any field is it makes good people go away over time. So now you "need" LLMs because no one is left that knows how to build a project from scratch. (hypebole but still true i think)

In an ideal sense when and unless only _do_ something in the positive path. Like imagine you are setting the result to a variable. In the normal "if" case you know that the result will be valid. But in the one-sided when/unless case you don't. In practice that usually means you are doing it for the side effect which is by def. not functional. Neither lang CL or scheme is strictly functional but scheme seems to be more functional in its vibe. That's maybe why unless/when are in the lang of CL but not in the lang of scheme.

Because it is not functional ... Unspecified is pointing out the code smell of it. If it returned false then it is basically an "if". That's how i see it anyways. I also return '() sometimes. Especially in the scheme html lib i'm using. I kinda miss common-lisp's spinnerrett where IIRC a you can use a when/unless and it just "disappears" on the negative path. In scheme I HAVE to use "if" or else (no-pun) the unspecified explodes the html generator. But i still like it.

That's what i mean, scheme makes me not want to use "when" or "unless". To me the scheme idiom points out that almost always "if" is what you want. (with both clauses filled in) I've been meaning to track this down, what does when/unless return in common-lisp? (on the negative clause)

I have found the idioms of common-lisp and scheme around true and false and the empty list BOTH GOOD. But also very different. Like common-lisp does what you usually want, but scheme is more logically consistent. Scheme makes me happier to be more functional, like I use when and unless less in scheme because the functional idiom is to always return something. (what does "when" return on a true argument?) I am liking scheme especially after using common-lisp, and the cool thing is i assume the opposite would be true as well.

#snac is a GREAT example of how something can be degrowthed
for good.

At first after using snac (coming from mastodon for example),
you feel like the UI is too minimal. Then you realize it's not
minimal at all, it's just getting out of your way.

You focus on the messages and not on the interface.

Can people "post" stuff to a person's INBOX if they don't have any relationship? (in ActivityPub) That might explain why I have a single instance snac server, and still get basically spam posts. I know I get something similar to that when there is like a secondary relationship thru someone i am following. But these things I see seemingly have no connecting relationships. #activitypub #snac2 #snac

Containers or virtual machines won't help typically help. Because they typically keep the same CPU arch. (as the host) Unless you use qemu "emulated" but that is REALLY SLOW. Compiling on the machine you want it for is (i think) the good first step.

A nuance that non-programmers won't get about LLM/AI
adoption.

Specifically Anthropic is tailored to "not good" programmers
and project managers who think they "are good".

The agent/LLM makes it easy for these types to
pretend to do stuff.

This works because

1. Corporate software is filled
with these types.

2. Corporate software rarely finishes projects, so
no one notices how crap it is.

One of the constant problems with western
society and capitalism and individualism ...

The MESSAGE is what matters not who sent it.
NOT who OWNS it. Like we are so steeped in
cults of personality that we don't see it.
Even very leftists do it. ANY NAME dropping is this.
Sure the name can be a reference to an idea
but 9 times out of 10 the name itself is the idea.
(that's the problem)

Because they are different. I am human.
I change my mind ... like always.
Moreso my mind is usually in a conflicted
state so i don't even have "one" mind
or one opinion. I would think it bad
for something I said that was good to
be associated with me, because i will
eventually tarnish it. I think that pattern
basically exists for all ideas backed by
a persons identity.

I say "no gods no masters" a lot. This is like
a mantra against the identity politics we
default to. (I understand that can mean
other things too.)

I did some work on my house a week or so ago.
I took down this ratty wood cover roof thing
that was attached to the side of the house.
It needed to come down because it was falling
apart, but also it was the way I assume squirrels
were getting into my house. There was a hole in
the shingles right above it so I assume they would
get to the little roof from a tree, and then easy
access into my house :(

I couldn't get to the hole also because the roof
was blocking the way if i used a ladder, and it's
way too ratty to stand on it or anything.

Anyways I tore that roof thing down with
the cheapest wired sawzall that home despot had.
And then I used this foam filler that said anti pest.
And ... so far so good.

Oh i used to hear the animals skittering around in my walls.
I haven't heard that since. I'm always surprised when
i get things done that i was able to do them :P

(If I rattled off all the things I have done to my house
it would sound like I am good at stuff, but i
really struggle with doing that kind of stuff.
Weirdly I'm pretty experienced I guess from all
the jobs I have had growing up. I've done
painting, and demo and simple construction
like installing shingles. I think I will need to
really level up on shingles, because my
house needs lots of shingle patching, or just
to re-shingle it. That is an area where it is worth it
to have a nailgun :P)

Hot take:

Here is one of the bad things of "the industry"'s obsession
with scale.

It makes doing a thing once and fast become trivialized. If it's
at scale then it's always on. Like 10 of them are always on.
And that leads to trivializing efficiency and startup time.

It also leads to trivializing the runtime complexity of the OS /
system.

So that is creepily the programmer for one, giving up
an aspect of the art of programming (optimization and
efficiency). And two, it is training the programmer to
play into the hand of $BIG_SERVER_RENTIER.

Our "best practices" as in IT industry happen to be good
at consolidating resources in a way that rich people can
get richer.

Nice! I have been basically doing this, (others to I think). All my new sites have been very minimal html with zero javascript. I have a wiki and a task tracker. They both support convieniences like multi select check boxes (select all / select none). It's very nice, because I am interacting with data not a "web page". They work in dillo. Sometimes I have to fiddle with the caching headers on really dynamic stuff.
